Jade was micro-chipped when we got her. Her company is AKC Reunite (which looks like it was formerly AKC CAR) and I have not registered her yet.
Barkley came chipped with Home Again and when Gracie got chipped our vet uses Home Again as well, so I did not have this question then.
I have done a search here on DK regarding chipping. Who knew it could be so controversial? ;)
My question is do I stick with the company she is chipped with or do I register her on Home Again with the others? I've never had a problem with either of the other dogs and once registered, they are in the system - so it says.
However, if the vets in the area only look up one database, then does that mean that if one of my dogs got found and was scanned for a chip - they would only ask one company for info? Or do they do a search through multiple companies (Home Again, AKC Reunite, Avid, etc)?

I believe the scanners at the vets' offices can read any manufacturer's chip, but I'm not sure. I'd ask my vet. I know that I've had fosters with chips from several different companies and my vet's office was able to read all of them.
As far as registering Jade's chip with another company, I'm not sure you can do that. Your best bet is to contact the company and ask them.
If we are talking about a lost dog here, I cannot imagine any vet not contacting whoever they need to contact to get the owner's information and notify them. What else would they do?
I think you have to register with the company that made the chip--the number would be unique for that company but may be duplicated with another company....so if the wrong company was used, there could be two dogs with the same number.
Clancy is chipped with Home Again and Ned with Avid. I also registered Clancy's chip with Avid when I got him as a rescue. He is double protected. The scanner reads the chip. I have my vet check both boys chips whenever we go in.
