Just wondering if anyone other than me has experienced negative responses when you proudly announce that you got a second puppy. It is driving me crazy. The responce I get is....are you CRAZY?!?!? It seems everyone I tell (except all here on Doodlekisses) has the same reaction. I just don't get it. Why wouldn't everyone want 2 or more dogs...lol.
I couldn't be happier with my Doodle family!

We got the negative response when we got Mariner. Mariner is our third and has some special needs (visually impaired and seizures). We have a great pack.
We definitely got some negative responses when we adopted Kirby (for getting a 2nd dog, not for adopting an older dog). My mom thought we were nuts (I think she's afraid we're just going to have dogs and never children) and people at work thought we were nuts too. I actually stopped telling people for awhile.

Everyone (my family included) changed their tune. Kirby is so well behaved that nobody thinks we're nuts anymore (or they just keep it to themselves) :)
Hi Sheri, even my husband was against two, until we got the second :) She is the love of his life, and we would never have just one again. What fun they have together, and even though it is mostly I who walk and take them both out, they are obedience trained and are just a joy! People don't know what they are missing......... Enjoy your two!
Hi Sheri, We did get some negative responses when we decided to add a second puppy. Most often it was "why would you want another dog"...Like you we couldn't be happier with our 2 doodles.
Well almost everyone I know thinks we are crazy and have lost our minds. I really don't care we are addicted with out a doubt but I feel it is a good addiction. All of ours are better taken care of than a lot of the kids we work with that have no homes which sometimes makes me sad. But I think that eight is enough because it does get a little crazy once in a while lol.But if some doodle needs us we probably would take care of it. My husband says under his breath its cheaper by the dozen it doesnt help he is just as bad as me.
The only time we got any kind of response like that was when we were going through a bad time financially. It seemed like most of my family just thought we should get rid of one. I quit talking to several of them and when we went through another hard time they never said a word. We have had two dogs since I married Kevin 15 years ago. I will never go back to a one dog home if I can avoid it.
Just tell those that ask if you are nuts say "yeh but I am a down right happy nut are you?" Hahahaha!!!
I guess we were lucky, or I just did not listen if anyone said anything! :) How could anyone only have one.. they need to have friends too! And my 2 enjoy each other so much!
My non-pet friends think I'm crazy, but they thought I was crazy for have any dog in the first place. I always wanted to live out in the country and have lots of dogs, but I'm happy in my townhouse with two.

I do feel guilty for how expensive labradoodles are. My old adopted dog had been a challenge, so I knew I wanted a dog from a breeder, and then I fell in love with labradoodles. I love the breeder I got both my doodles from, but I still feel guilty. How has anyone dealt with this?
I know what you mean about feeling guilty. We rehomed 2 of ours as young adults and the other one we got from a good breeder as a puppy for the price of her vet treatment only, because she had an eye problem at the time, so we haven't actually ever paid the full price for one ourselves. I do feel uncomfortable about how expensive they are normally because I feel it makes them quite an 'exclusive' kind of dog. I don't really get how that price is justified, though I do understand that breeding can be an expensive business.
Like you we live in a city (though by the coast), but are country dwellers at heart!
We have four Maltese and our Goldendoodle, Holly. Since we previously bred Maltese and sometimes had sixteen to twenty dogs around the house; five dogs seem perfectly manageable. They are all housebroken and all get along great and are a joy to live with. We also have a twenty-five pound yellow tabby tomcat. It's just one big happy family around here!

Some people in my wife's bridge club asked her if she has had any luck placing the dogs and were very surprised when Judy said that we don't have any intention of placing any of them! Even when we had a large number of dogs; there was always room for one more if a Maltese needed rescuing. However, we usually have just one large dog at a time but... if a local Doodle needs to be rescue we will make room for it. The local shelter has our number to call if a Doodle shows up. We will, at least, foster it rather than have it languish in the shelter.

We actually tried to adopt a Doodle puppy from a shelter in Los Angeles but, ended up getting Holly from a reputable breeder. We really feel better about that. Our last big dog was a rescue and had multiple health problems during the ten years she was with us. We loved her dearly and would do it again but, it is time for us to have a healthy big dog. Holly seems very healthy.
Tell me about it! My daughter has two doodles and I have one plus another dog. We moved in together last September, resulting in 4 dogs (plus 3 cats and 2 humans) living together. Almost everyone responded to the news negatively - not that we decided to share for a while or that I was selling my home and moving to another part of town - but that we'd be living with 4 dogs!! Some people really got wound up about it even though it was nothing to do with them. Weird! Yes it gets a bit crazy at times but mostly it's wonderful and I love them all to bits! Likewise - I couldn't be happier with my doggie, and mostly doodle, family!

Any non-dog lover has had this same response=negative:( I could take it one step further and say I've actually been shunned by relatives because of it. For example, I was in a car pool situation where I drove my niece to school with my kids and she would bring them home. About half way through the year she began lying to me about why her daughter couldn't come in the a.m. for me to take her to school but would happily bring my kids home. I didn't feel right about her having the burden all to herself and confronted her about it- this lopsided arrangement. After much words she finnally confessed to me that her daughter didn't like my dogs! Now if she would have been upfront with me in the begining I would have left the dogs at home instead of bringing them in the carpool in the morning. Instead we have had much hard feelings against eachother and the relationship has been strained ever since.
