Oliver had a seizure this afternoon.  He is fine now, still a bit anxious but I brought him to my vet, she checked him out and did bloodworm and all is normal.  He also had TPLO surgery 2 weeks ago and had his follow up yesterday and all is going well with his recovery. The Vet cannot tell me why he had the seizure, there is no way that he could have gotten into anything as we have had him contained in a pen, bringing him out only to go to the bathroom.  It was such a scary experience and I am terribly shaken up.  My Vet and the Vet at the hospital he had his knee surgery have said that the seizure could not have been caused by the surgery and the only med that they are having me stop is Trazadone (anti anxiety).  He is also on Garbapentin and Carprofen.  I am worried sick and now I am afraid to leave his side :(  Has anyone had a similar experience that you would like to share that may help me cope with this.

My Jackdoodle had terrible side effects from Gabapentin, including temporary paralysis in his back end and loss of balance. We stopped it after only a few days. I've since learned these are known side effects. I don't know if it could cause seizures, but it can definitely cause other neurologic symptoms.
Also, if you happen to be using Nexgard, Bravecto, or Simparica, those have all been linked to seizures in some dogs.

We have a Seizure Disorder Group here where the members have a lot of experience with this and might be able to help you. Lots of info on managing seizures, too.
Here's a link: https://doodlekisses.com/group/seizures

Oliver has never had any of those flea and tick meds so it definitely is not that.  As for the Gabapentin,  both Vets say that is also used as an anti seizure med so they don't think it could be that.  I'm at a loss, not to mention crying all afternoon, just because.  I would like to stop the Gabapentin just to be safe, I feel he is not having much pain from the knee surgery, but it is very hard to tell.  I have also read that stress can sometimes cause seizures.  Oliver is very emotional and anxious when he is upset.  I know he is feeling isolated because we have been keeping him penned to keep him from jumping on furniture.  I am going to now block off my furniture and give him more freedom so he does not feel so isolated.  Thank you for the link, I still have troubles searching.  I will check out the group.  It is really hard to sit and wait to see if it will happen again :(

I have heard of a few other doodles that had seizures after surgery--not sure if it is the meds they are on or the effect of the anesthesia...just anecdotal.

It took about 3 days for Oliver to get back to his normal self, he was extremely anxious and would not calm down being penned up.  I decided to take down the pen and allow him some freedom and he is off all meds.  He is doing much better.  I am convinced that the seizure was a result of the surgery, anesthesia, and the meds.

I have replied in the "seizure" group.

Thank you, Andy. I was hoping you would.
