This is disgusting...

Out of nowhere, Sadie not only took a poop in the house, she ate it. We got a whiff of poop, started looking for it and realized she ate it when we smelled her breath. Then, she threw up in the middle of the night, I can't imagine why !! We figured she needed more food, she does not eat poop or try to outdoors, so we increased her food a little. This happened last Sat nite and this week has been fine until tonite(Fri.) Same thing, got the smell, my husband jumped up and she was just finishing it off. First, she had just come in from outside and had only done pee. Second, she has done it the same place, hallway around the corner from our living room. This has been her time to chill out with us and she has been doing pretty well with the poochie bells and letting us know she needs to go....what do we do? We told her no,naughty,took her back outside and then put her in her crate. She looks so guilty and she knows she did something really wrong. Has this happened to anyone else?? Ewwww, this is a tough one. I'm sure someone else has been through it and will provide some good advise. We've had many accidents, but they haven't ever tried to consume it :( Occasionally in the past, Scrappy had decided to try a frozen poopsicle while playing outside in the winter. Thankfully, it never became a habit.

I just wanted to ask if you tried cleaning up the place she went with Nature's Miracle or another kind of pet odor remover/cleaner, instead of regular cleaners....which don't completely get out the smell. We must have gone through a gallon with Grover..he took a while on bladder control!

Hang in there and hope things get better...I know how frustrating it can be.

My older dog ate cat poo when he was a pup - so I can totally sympathize! I heard that if you put a bit of pineapple in the food, the poo ends up distasteful to them. But that solution was a bit easier (got a litter box that he couldn't get his head in!) Good Luck! My new pup hasn't tried that yet, but I'm always on the lookout!

My Maggie seems to only be interested in duck or geese poop near a small lake by our house. When we are walking in the field by the lake she just sniffs other dog poop but feels the need to have a nibble of goose poop if we get close to the lake where it is very prevalent. Yech!

Hi Linda, I feel with you because Benny did the same....especially frozen poop was a delicatecy for him. It was really disgusting and he was so sneaky in grabbing the poop that we almost had no chance...
My former did it as well when he was a puppy but grew out of it very quickly but Benny kept doing it.
I read that a puppy's stomach is very sensitive still and that they eat poop to help them digesting their food.
So I tried everything: feed more smaller portions, add additional food supplies, add garlic, add pineapple, but nothing helped.
Then I read in a fourm that for some people dried yeast or brewer's yeast together with a little bit stinky cheese helps.
It took a week but then I saw the success. Benny leaves now all poop alone and has no interest in it anymore.
I stopped adding the yeast now and still he doesn't eat it the poop anymore. Maybe it works for you as well.

Hi Zoe, That is the strange thing about this situation, Sadie does not eat poop outdoors, frozen or fresh. It's just been these 2 isolated in the house this past week. It's like she pooped in the house just to eat it! Thanks for the info.

Hi Linda,

Like a lot of people have said, some dogs just eat poop, especially poop from other animals. And other times, dogs will eat their poop to clean up after themselves or conceal the evidence that they went potty inside, which I feel is what your dog is going through. I would try to go buy the product that you put in their food that deters them from eating their own poop. This has been a discussion before on DK in the Forum or in this group, if I find it I will post it to this discussion.

Like all proud mothers this is one thing I said my dogs would NEVER do. Haha! Wrong! They haven't eaten their own or even each other's poo but have recently discovered horse and deer poo on our walks in the park. Zeke stuck his nose in a very fresh pile of horse poo (gross) and promptly licked it off. He and Lily both found some deer droppings and you would have thought they had hit the treat jack-pot. Needless to say we are practicing the "leave it" command a lot.

Linda - oddly Sadie's littermate Cocoa also eats her own poop - she hasn't gone indoors, but when she goes outdoors I have to clean up immediately or she does it for me. It is disgusting and none of the food additives - natural or chemical seem to work. She also loves other animal droppings - and we have a variety here. She doesn't get sick - I am almost hoping she will and that that might deter her - but so far no. I try to catch her whenever possible, but she runs off leash a fair amount with other dogs so I don't know what I am missing. I have tried one of those remote control deterrent collars and she jumps away when it beeps or sprays, but then she goes right back later. She has an amazing memory for the correct location as well. What could possibly be so appealing in something so foul??? It isn't a guilty covering her tracks issue which yours might be since she is going outdoors in the right place. I have asked the vet if it is nutritional issue and she says no - some dogs just do this ... YUCK! Hopefully they will both outgrow it ... Anyway, she is now about 32 lbs and has pretty much stopped the mouthing/nipping - she is losing the puppy teeth every day. Other than this nasty habit, she is a very good girl!

I have owned mutts and Bouviers. But until my Goldendoodle I had never experienced this problem. He ate his poop, his 3 1/2 yr old Bouvier sister's poop. We have a large dog pen so I was slow to notice what was going on. And it hasn't stopped snowing since I brought him home in November. Then I brought home my 3 month old(at the time) Standard Poodle at the end of December and to may dismay he also did it. But he did it inside as well...his "accidents" he ate up very quickly.I even caught him eating the poop as came out of the Bouvier's rectum having not even hit the snow yet!!!!!!!! Warm poop for goodness sakes. I wonder if it tastes better that way. NOT lol !
My Vet told me to feed everybody pineapple. It worked almost immediately. So after about a week I stopped and the poop eating ceased for about a month. But now it has just begun again and the pineapple doesn't seem to be stopping the Poodle this time and it's been 4 days. I'm glad to see the note on Yeast or Brewer's Yeast but what exactly is "stinky cheese" and in what form.. like grated parmesan? And just mix it with the yeast into the pineapple ...and what's the approximate ratio?
My sister-in-law has a 6 yr old female Weimeriner (spelled incorrectly sorry) and she has never stopped eating poop. she eats everybodies poop. At the cottage who knows what animal's poop it is. It certainly is disgusting but worse than that what about the chance of illness or disease as a result.
Waiting to here about the ratio of Brewer's Yeast and Stinky Cheese as my Poodle Rocky eats everyone's last night's dinner again .

I've heard that one reason can be a diet that isn't easily digestible or that the dog needs a diet higher in protein. However, I'm not a vet so, I wold double check this "fact."
