Toby had his surgery early Tuesday morning, and now, Friday evening, he has become quite spry. He's interested in going on walks, he is running in the house, he wants to jump up....oh my. We are supposed to keep him fairly quiet until next Friday. I see this becoming more of a challenge as the days roll on.....
Good luck in keeping him quiet. We had no such luck when Samantha was spayed. We did indoor games - she is ball obsessive and loves to play roley-poley so we spent hours doing that and we did play catch but indoors there is only so much room so she wasn't able to run too far and didn't pull any stitches out. The only other thing we could find to keep her quiet was filled kongs but by day 3 we were out for long walks.
I can't imagine trying to keep a puppy quiet and relaxed. Good luck is all I can say. Years ago my youngest daughter broke her collar bone falling out of bed. She was 3 at the time, and I was told to keep her quiet and not let her run around. Hello!!! She is 3, what do you suggest I do, tie her down. LOL. Anyway, it worked out fine and we survived, but my point is that it is a challenge.......and I so completely understand your concerns.
It is such a challenge. Taffy ended up getting a fluid sac built up around her incision because she was too active. It looked like she had swallowed a golf ball. We ended up keeping her contained to a small part of the house, which made her pretty stir crazy and she started doing whatever she could to do to drive us crazy. Well her golf ball is gone and things are back to normal. Don't worry you can make it!
I honestly think the first few days are most important. I think I said this before, but our "quiet" only lasted about 5-6 days with Dexter and 3 days with Kirby and both were ok. I was afraid of them hurting themselves with jumping up so I tried to tire them out my way (i.e. walks and controlled indoor games). Glad he's feeling better :)
Does he have to go back to the vet on Friday? Do the stitches dissolve or do they remove them? After 5 days of relative calmness, I was told they are good to go.
We took him in today for a re-check, because I saw some leaking fluid from one of his two incisions. He has some fluid build-up, so is now on antibiotics. He is going in again next Saturday for a final check/stitches removal. The vet told us some of the stitches are already missing....... I don't know when Toby would have done that - I keep a really good eye on him. AND....we have to try to keep him quiet for the next week. "sigh"
