Big Sock Scare
Has anyone had something similar to this happen???
Angel loves to eat socks. Mostly the kids socks. She does not stop to enjoy the chew, just swallows them whole in 3 seconds. There is no hope of getting it away. Normally they will come right back out one end or another.
We knew she had swallowed one of my son's blue socks. But it was not coming out. 3 or 4 days after eating the sock she started vomitting 1 or 2 times a day. Her activity level was fine and she ate and pooped fine. I called the vet just to get an idea of how long is too long for the sock to stay in her tummy and what would be really bad signs I should look for. Well my vet told the receptionist to tell me the vomitting was a very bad sign and take her to the Emergency Vet Clinic immediately because they were not able to see her for next 3 days. She needed a scope and probably surgery. Whoa - that was not what I was expecting especailly when the dog was acting perfectly normal. I am not a rush to the emergency room type person, especially when I never talked to the vet personally and they have not seen the dog.
My neighbor is a vet and I asked her opinion before deciding to leave anywhere. She said she has known dogs to keep something in their stomachs for a month or more sometimes. Angel would look and feel really bad if it was dangerous. She would vomit over 5 times a day if the sock was stuck and she would not want to play and she would act like she was in pain. Defnintely no her symptoms. My neighbor said she could feel a hard lump if the sock was stuck in the tummy or intestines. Then go to the emergency vet. (Most Vet clinics here do not have the advanced equipment as the emergency vet clinic) What a save there. It was the information I was looking for. I decided to keep a watch and hold off on the emergency clinic. I definitely think I am switching vets.
The next day she threw up one of my husbands socks. The day after that another one of my husbands socks came out the other end. We were very suprised and are now really keeping socks out of her reach. We are still anticipating the blue sock. But she is fine, happy and playful. That saved me a ton of money!!!

WOW! Good thing you talked to your neighbor. You definily need a new vet. Have you ever considered the blue sock was simply lost in the lost sock department of your washer or dryer.? LOL
These doods will eat anything, branches from bushes are Willy's favorite chew of choice at the moment.

I worked at a vet's office during college. We had a beautiful black lab come in one day who had been vomiting. This poor dog ended up dying before anyone could figure out that he had swallowed a sock and it was stuck in his intestine.
Since I saw this first hand I won't let my dogs get anywhere near socks now. Such a sad story. -

That is scarey. We are watching her closely. She has stopped vomitting after the second sock came out. If it starts up again we will watch her closely. Thanks for the heads up. I like to have all kinds of info. before making a decision.
The blue sock may not be an issue. But my husband was pretty sure she swallowed it. We are definitely keeping socks away. -

Wow, so sad. I think the fact that my own vet would not make time to see my dood would be enough to make me want to switch vets. I have never had the vet not be willing to squeeze me in when something worrysome came up.

I was not happy with the vet. I could not even leave a message for her to call me back on the phone. We have only lived here for a year. I am used to our old vet when we had dogs 10 years ago being much more willing to fit us in and at least call me back.

The other night my doodle Jake, was a little restless at night time...he kept asking to go outside and just could not settle down. This went on until about 2 or 3 in the morning when he started heaving and making wretcing sounds like he needed to bring something up. He did this about 4-5 times before we finally heard the "big wretch". I prepared myself to clean up a big mess of vomit. As I approached the scene I could not have been more horrified if he had thrown up a live kitten....there lying on the carpet was a used feminine napkin (overnight size) that had been thrown into the bathroom waste basket!!!! I think I almost threw up myself!!
Thank God he was able to bring it up himself. I could not imagine having to go to the vet to have that surgically removed from his tummy!!!
The waste basket has now been moved under the bathroom counter.... -

Hey, you might want to train her to do an automatic leave it when she sees a sock. It seems more trustworthy than just trying to keep socks away. I'm not entirely sure how to do that, except to practice leave it over and over again with socks, but maybe they can help you in one of the training groups?

WOW, Riley steals socks all the time when I am doing laundry. I NEVER thought he could or would actually swallow it, he just likes to play " keep away" with it. That is really scary! I am going to be more careful with the socks.
I am glad that she is ok though. That is an incredible story. -

My Maggie loves to chew on socks but has never swallowed any (that I know of!). She is at my feet chewing on a rock as I am typing this! Shortly after I brought her home at 8 weeks she was gnawing on the edge of the concrete patio. I was flabberghasted! She doesn't do that anymore but she literally "eats" the lava rocks that are in the backyard because they are soft enough. She is eating what appears to be a concrete rock now! Yes, branches from the trees, grass, occassional poo (other dogs& some geese!), houseslippers, shoes, boxes, anything!

I just saw your post from April about your sock problems. Are things better now? Our last doodle would eat socks like they were a food group! Weekly I would find them in the yard! I have now realized he did it because he had separation issues. He would trot around after we were out of the house and would then go on a sock hunt. I tried everything to get the kids to pick up socks but somehow he still found them. I hope your dog is ok and his sock fetish has gone away!
