Our 6 month old gets the zoomies when he gets into sand. Then ofcourse he has to slide on it like he''s a professional baseball player sliding into home plate!!
My Neely likes to dig in the sand. My husband dug out the area in the backyard where a deck is going and filled it with sand to prepare the surface. It has been left like that as other stuff has gotten done first. So Neely has decided to use one little corner of the area for his hole. This is a special hole. It has to be dug to a certain depth, numerous times during the process it must be measured in comparison to the length of his muzzle. Sometimes he has to roll on his back and roll his head into the hole to approzimate size as well. To make sure that the accumulation of sand that has already been cleared from the hole doesn't create a rim around the outside he must lay on his belly and shove the sand away with his paws. This must be done furiously with an upbeart alternating tempo.
Now that the hole is done and daily upkeep is complete, he now gets his variety of treasures to keep in the hole. He takes them in and out but there will always be somesort of treasure in the hole. The amount of time it gets left in the hole seems to dictate the importance of the hole. An orange rind was THE TREASURE for numerous weeks. It was taken out and was offered to Jazzy our 15 yr old labx almost daily. I am pretty sure Jazzy was thankful she is 15 and her scenses have dimmed when Neely offered her that piece of rind that no longer resembled the fresh citrus peel in no shape or form.
The area beside the treasure hole is meant for lazing in. A nice paw stretching activity area where a body can lay and get right down into the cool wet sand to enjoy the dampness. To wriggle in wet sand is just like having an itch scratched all over your furry little body. It feels glamourous.
When I come in side I like to share my sand with mommy in her bed. Neely loves to snuggle in the decorative pillows at the top of the bed under the comforter and on those bright white sheets. I am pretty sure he thinks he is helping to exfoliate her skin so she stays nice and soft to snuggle up to at night.
Neely and I can't wait to hit the beach this summer too.
This is the one thing I've noticed about our puppy Gidget since we brought her home on the 15th! She LOVES to dig in the sand! We had our pool installed a few months ago and there was some sand left behind...she goes straight for it when we take her outside! She digs and digs in it! Then tonight, she took a quick dip in the baby pool we set up for her (she's still not sure if she likes it, lol) and she noticed that my son was playing in his SANDBOX! She got right out of the pool and headed straight to the sandbox and rolled around like a crazy dog! I couldn't get to her fast enough, she was just having a blast and I couldn't stop laughing! I was so surprised when I realized how much she loves the sand...now I look forward to taking her to the beach!
