So today, my 13 week old puppy was sleeping..and I noticied his breathing started sounded grunting like. I woke him up not knowing what to do, and he was kinda slow to awake (maybe in very deep sleep)...and then fell back asleep..and minutes later did it again. I woke him up once more..and then he stayed awake. He has fallen asleep since then and has not done it. I'm sure it's probably nothing to worry about, but I'm a registered nurse who often sees many bad things so I tend to worry about and overanalyze normal occurences. Anyone have this happen before?
I dont think it is a bad thing. Abby grunts when awake. It is so cute, she grunts when her ears are cleaned, she grunts when I am talking to her in an " I love you so much I can just eat you up!" tone of voice.
Agnes grunts, twitches, runs, etc. in her sleep. She used to make even more noises when she was younger. I think they are just dreaming. I can understand your worry, though, especially given your job experience. Unless you see other symptoms, I don't think it's anything bad.
I can always tell when Guinness is dreaming. His whole body moves/twitches and he makes some very strange noises. I can usually tell if it's a good or bad dream. I agree that the grunting is probably just a dream.
He was having a nice dream mom and you woke him up. I am sure he was so sound asleep that he was dreaming about something nice and grunting in pleasure. I am sure it had nothing to do with laboured breathing.
Lucy also dreams alot and does alot of funny noices, leg twitching, blowing, barking under her breath. It is sooooo funny. I wish I could get this on video. I am also a nurse, but i think this is normal and nothing to worry about.
Unless there is other things happening I don't believe that there should be a problem. But if there is any foaming of the mouth or abnormal jaw movements or difficulty waking the dog- it may be sign of seizure activity. I do not want to be an alarmist but those are some signs of seizures.
It is normal for a dog to have active dreams, leg movements etc. You shouldn't wake a dreaming dog as they may get disoriented - not knowing where the dream ends and waking period begins.
Neely also makes grunting noises. I think sometimes it sounds as though he is trying to talk in his sleep as he doesn't bark alot but makes this muffled sound at times during the day. It sounds something similair to that in his sleep. He is also hilarious when he is dreaming, once all fours were going and he was huffing randomly.
You may also have noticed that doodles also seem to like to BURP. They seem to do it then look at you like what??? or look around as if to say I didn't do it. Possibly it was a burb it kinda sounds like that too.
