Hi. Can anyone give us some info about dew claws? Our little Sammy is 8 weeks old and we heard that dew claws have to be removed at an early age. Thanks. New to this site ...

Welcome, Mike, Cathy, and Sammy.  I was told by my vet that they need to be removed at just a few days old, or in an emergency surgery situation at any older age...But you'll also find other discussions, here, about the positive reasons for Doodles to keep those dew claws ( agility training being one, if I remember correctly.)

You're welcome!  You'll find D.K. has oodles of good info re: your Doodle!
You do.
Both of mine have their dew claws....Seamus is 2 and Stella is 1.....we've never encountered a problem with them.  They occasionally chew on them but doesn't seem to be a big deal.  =)

Hi.  When we got Cooper at 7 weeks old, he still had his dew claws and I asked our vet about removing them.  He said that it wasn't really necessary since they weren't very prominant (like they are in some other breeds).  He said that it was totally up to us and if we chose to do it, it could be done at the same time we had him neutered.  We never had it done and Cooper is almost a year and a half old now.  As far as I can tell, the only difference between Cooper and the dogs that don't have them anymore is that I have to two extra toe nails to clip when I clip the others.  (We used to have a Choc. Lab that still had his dew claws and he never had any trouble with them either.)

I feel that they were born with them and unless there is a compelling reason to remove them (hunting in dense underbrush)  they should get to keep them.

My opinion is not to remove them.  But please check out the other discussion.

Ours were removed already by the breeder-I wonder if this is breeder preference?
My dachshund and my doodle both still have their dew claws. We've never had a problem with them.
Lola has hers, and personally, I would never remove my dog's dew claws unless there was a medical or vet-recommended reason for it. I figure they were born with them for a reason, so they should probably keep them!!! Good luck with your research, and welcome to doodlekisses...you'll be addicted soon enough!!!! LOL

Mine all have theirs, my friends doodles have all theirs. I do know that Samantha loves to rub her face with them.

No problems here

Tara had her's removed before she came to live with us at 8 weeks so she must have been really tiny! I hate to think about doing that to a little puppy! I'm sure they don't sedate them at that age! :(
