Not a chance.  Just bring him something really yummy when you come to pick him up and chances are he will forget he was even boarded.  Occasionally one will pout for a little while when they are picked up but I think that is pretty unusual.  We personally haven't boarded our doodles, but did used to board our little toy poodle all the time and she was always fine.

Not a chance!  If you were gone for a year, he'd remember.

Your puppy will do just fine, make sure to take some of his toys and perhaps an old tee-shirt of yours or your husbands that you have worn and not washed, the scent will comfort him.

One suggestion - have you thought of other places to board the puppy besides the vet?  Unless they are also set up to be a kennel - I find that leaving the pet at the vet - the pet spends too much time in a cage - no one there throught the night, etc.  I'd be asking the vet, friends and family if they know of a professional pet sitter who puppy sits in their home.

I agree--the vet is a friend so maybe you know that they will do more for your dog than is typical, but they sit in a cage all day and are walked now and then when at my vet's. I have worked with a young woman in my neighborhood for a while now, getting her familiar with my dogs and their routine so that she can housesit when I go away--it is better for the dogs and she loves the extra $$ and the freedom (She lives with her parents still as she is only 17). If it is someone VERY trustworthy, this can be a great arrangement.

Other places have exercise yards where the dogs can spend time outside and I have even heard of some where the dog stays in the house with the family--actually I do that for friends with doodles--I watch their dogs and they are right in my house with all of my dogs--but I can only take one at a time since I have 3 doodles already!!

OH and NO the puppy will not forget you!!!

if you find a place that allows the dogs to play together during the day, then your pup will get some socialization while you are away which would be a great opportunity.  Check out this website for a list of boarding places in your area.  I always use it when I'm looking for a place to board.  It gives me an idea of what is available and then I can look at the websites for the facilities, call them, and visit to find the perfect place.  http://www.dogboarding.com/newyork

I agree with the other comments.  I would look into other arrangements than the vet.  We once boarded our old schnauzer at the vet thinking it would be better care for him.  We had been clients for nearly 20 years and thought that since they new Max and us they would take good care of him. On the second day they called and said we needed to pick him up.  He had fallen off his bed in the kennel and worn a hole in his hip.  DH rushed home.  Not a good experience.  The last time we went on vacation we hired a friend of a friend to stay at the house.  Much better.  Less expensive with 3 dogs and she got time away from her parent's house.

As for forgetting you-- NO WAY.

I sure don't know everything about dogs, but I do know leads me to think that it's not even possible for them to forget you, and certainly not in a week.

No worries! Your pup will be thrilled to see you and will know you instantly. We have always left our dogs at home and had someone come to stay in our home with them. It is less traumatic for the pup to have you away when the surroundings are familiar... you will do what you can though so don't fret too much about it.

Not way will he forget, I had to go away on business when my Sasha was young and I got the best greeting anyone could ever ask for when I came home :)    He will not forget you, just make sure you bring him a really nice toy or treat when you come home :)

Hi, just a thought, but where ever you new pups stays, make sure he has something  from home that is  familiar to him,  a toy or pet pillow. Something with a scent from home or your scent, like an old t- shirt, with him will help.

When Bailey was about 16 weeks old my Granny died and we had to board her for the weekend (3 days)..She knew us instantly and even happy pee'd on my foot ; )

I agree - he will not forget!!!  But I also agree with others about using a facility where he won't be crated all day.  We take Peri to our local Dogtopia - which has daycare, so she is out all day and then sleeps in a crate at night.
