Ok, I've always known that Riley is a smart cookie....he's done well in obedience and agility classes and catches on quickly when learning new tricks.  He also remembers where we hide sticks during walks even when we rotate the hidden caches.  Well, he managed to surprise me again.  Some background:  Since he was a puppy, Riley occassionally vomits bile in the morning even with a snack or meal in the evening.  It now happens about every 2 or 3 months.  For some reason, I've developed this ability to wake up (even from a deep sleep) to hear him when he starts dry heaving, which he always does about 4-5 times before actually vomiting.  Because the bedroom area is carpeted, I try carry him over to the tub to vomit, and then I turn on the water to wash the tub.  But sometimes I'm too late, and he ends up vomiting on the carpet.

Well, I was sick over the weekend, so my faculties weren't 100%.  But I woke up with a start and heard Riley dry heaving but it sounded distant.  I grabbed my glasses and looked around for him, but I didn't see him in the bedroom, bedroom foyer, or the closet.  Then I walked into the bathroom, where the shower curtain was drawn closed for the full length of the tub -- I pushed aside the shower curtain, and there was poor Riley dry heaving in the tub.  Poor little guy managed to get himself into the tub even with the shower curtain drawn!

What a good boy!!!  All that practice taught him where to do his stuff =)  Wish my dogs could read, I'd make them read this!
Oh that is incredible.. Sounds like he may need a Pepcid though. He may be refluxing a bit.
What a neat story!!!  What a smart dog you have!

Riley you are so smart, just a good example of training without knowing you are doing it. Quincy has his spot to throw up as well, sadly it is not the bathtub, it is the living room couch.  :<(

Poor guy!  Yoda does something very similar.  When he dry heaves we run to the front door and head outside.  I've never not gotten him outside when I heard him heaving.  Now he knows that and as soon as he starts heaving, he runs to the front door as soon as I look at him.  Well the other day I came home from work and he had gotten sick.  Guess where it was...right next to the front door!  Poor guy knew what he was supposed to do!
Wow, that is truly amazing!!!!....What a good boy Riley is...I just think that these doodles are the most amazing animals...If you go and tell people, other then us here, people will stare at you in disbelief, here on DK, we know how smart our animals are....
aww that is pretty amazing!
My two always prefer the carpet. I do try to catch them, not always successfully. Fortunately they don't do this often.

Awwww, Riley is one smart dood.

When Daisy was a baby and did this we would run and get a towel...there was always one around just in case, she started running to the towel folded in the corner of the room. Hilarious and smart, she was so tiny at the time.

Aw Riley, you are one genius dood
Wow!  That really is impressive.  Riley is one smart dood!!!
Smart Riley!  That is awesome of him to save you the trouble of cleaning up after him.  A few time, in the middle of the night, Rua has started that dry-heave stuff.  I actually let her puke on the bed (gross, I know) because I know I will in mid-run trying to get her to a tile floor and trip over something in the dark.  I have a really good mattress and bought a very expensive mattress pad for it (ummm...somebody I know gets night sweats and wakes up drenched).  Since I know Rua's puke won't go through the pad, it is easier to wash the sheets/pad than clean the carpet.
