Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I have been walking the dogs in the morning around 6 when it is "only" 80 degrees out. We go anywhere from 2-3 miles. DH has been working on a project outside of the house, so they are alone more during the day. I figure a nice walk helps them out!
But dood, Peri is so exhausted by the end, she literally comes inside, eats breakfast, drinks a bowl of water and then collapses on the hardwoods over an a/c vent. Taquito goes off to the living room for his morning nap. They literally go back to sleep immediately. During the walk though, they are super happy!
I guess it's the heat, right? But 80 feels like 60 compared to our 100+ degree days we have been having! I guess Peri is also just getting a little older and more mature now. She doesn't have that crazy doodle energy like she used to!
What about your doods? Do they walk this time of year (if you are in a hotter location like I am)?

I don't think Allie hates the heat so much - but she hates the sun. she will lay in the shade no matter how high the temp!
My doods HATE the heat!!! We too walk ours early when we can....but for the most part they just lounge around all day and have short quick little romps in the yard every so often. They find the teeniest spot of shade to squeeze into also!
Just a side note too for everyone....be super careful about feeding the dogs AFTER they walk, run, or play in the heat. Most people know that bloat can happen when the dog runs around right after eating....but it is also caused when they eat right after they exert themselves. I lost a dog this way and the vet said many people don't know not to feed a dog after exercise. (And of course they always WANT to eat right after it). It's especially true when the dog is hot as well! (Just thought I'd post that since it's been so terrible out lately!)
I have kind of given up on walks when it is this Hot. I got a few in last week when it was a little cooler...But still too Hot for Trixie- or so she thinks.
She played outside with the Neighbors puppy today for 20 minutes...They really did not run around...Just ran in a small area & not fast. We came inside to cool off & she could not find a cool spot...The tile wouldnt do. behind the toilet wouldnt do & neither would the shower. I showed her to lay down flat on the tile & 'r e l a x'...That seemd to finally help.
Not only is food not a good idea right after exercise (bloat)...Neither are Ice cubes. I wait til she has rested before I give her any.
I will let her drink a little water after exercise...But I dont encourage her to drink it. I try to let her rest before that also.
