That is so funny!  Good idea.  It is not an easy task.

Found the best way to take a picture of a black doodle - tons of snow!

I get my doodles groomed about every 8 to 10 weeks. My girls don't get shaved because it irritates their skin, especially their tummies. My groomer gives them puppy cuts and hand trims them. I think they look great groomed (I like them grown out too!) They feel so soft and they really seem to like it (so much cooler in the summer). I do have coats for them made out of fleece that keeps them warm in the winter. But I usually try to keep them longer in the winter. If you ask your groomer to handtrim them you can get out the mats without shaving and they can keep their hair a little longer.

I agree with Lucy about the groomers...
And I should have mentioned how it helps to put a sweater on them for he first few days.
Especially when the weather is changing...I put sweaters (or coats) on my dogs and they really like them! I was surprised that a big dog would enjoy a sweater so much, but they really do.
That should help to get past the first shock of the trim.

You know, I hear what you are all saying about getting used to it and that they are cooler, and they love it, but I just have a real attitude about the groomers that think they can just do whatever they want because they choose to. If the dog is all matted and they cannot groom, or just do not want to take the time to groom them the way you asked, then so be it, call me and let it be my decision .... they don't have the right to just do whatever they want. If I took my child in for a trim and the stylist didn't like long hair, she wouldn't just cut it off! I feel it is the same with my dog. Just because you don't like shaggy, doesn't mean I don't. Needless to say, this is why I now groom my own dogs. Although I never had one get shaved, I did have an occasion when I didn't get what I asked for.
