Kim recommended keeping them to one inch hair length for the first year. So we just had her first hair cut. She looks adorable, and it makes it super easy to comb her out.
I bought a special metal comb, kind of like a pick for super curly or permed hair. My groomer helped me find the one that I have, and she really just lays on the floor and lets me brush her. I usually do it after bathing, or use a detangler.
Thank you, mike and mona-great advice. I'll get one and use the noise only. Like you, I hate to be saying no all the time! Chloé is really smart and should learn quickly. Any advice on brushing her? Do you have doggie stand? How do u do that? Chloé doesn't like it, and it's hard giving treats as the same time as brushing! She does well when I bathe her, very cooperative. Thx again!
Barbara, We got it at Petco. I will say that they were hesitant to sell it although I had used one before for our Springer, but she out weighs our Doodle by at least double. I had talked with out vet and told him that I just wanted a way to discourage her from certain behaviors when she wasn't right within reach so that I wasn't always telling her no. I use it very sparingly, and I am sure you will find the same. You use it a few times, and then it can be weeks or months before you need the re enforcements. You do need to be careful to not use them if the dog has any aggressive behavior as the collar can cause fear aggression. That is why I don't use the shock part of the collar. And honestly the noise portion works well. It is kind of like "God" speaking....the dog looks around like where is that coming from. Sort of like when my kids swear I have eyes in the back of my head. LOL Good luck! I love my doodle bunches, and she is really learning quickly!
Soupy and Petunia are my Shasta's parents, and she isn't stuborn and wasn't at all hard to train. A pure joy as soon as I got her, she just wanted to figure out what to do to please. I did spend alot of time with her the entire first year (she just turned two) as she is my service dog and has some specific tasks to do for me.
wow, that may be the answer-the shock collar and use the sound part. i hate telling her "no" all the time-getting tissues, chewing furniture, jumping up, etc. where did you get yours? ours is going to be fabulous, too-smart as a whip! thanks!
We did buy a shock collar for our 5 month old. But we have not used the shock portion of the collar, but used the sound portion. We chose to get one, so that we were not having to constantly tell her no or correct her, but so that she could be redirected by the noise which both of our dogs could hear. We have a 5 year old springer also, and both dogs can be stubborn and "deaf" when they want to be. But some how the noise the collar makes can redirect them both when needed. Our pippy also has had some tummy issues, although it wasn't guardia. We have found she is sensitive to certain foods. And she does best on the Blue Buffalo puppy food chicken and brown rice. She also eats raw turkey food from Darwins. She tolerates the raw beef, too, but not the Duck. We are very careful about the treats, the treats from China caused major diarrhea. Our Coco is a doll. She is a typical toddler at times and is most comfortable when her toys are all over. But honestly, if she can have a sock she is happy as a clam. This last month I can see alot more maturing. She is going to be a fabulous dog! Love her!
thx for the advice! she does need training, esp w bite inhibition. when i'm on top of them, she's pretty good, so she knows when she's doing wrong. they certainly ARE active. do you have any ideas abt toys? she's not interested in the kong where treats are inside. she loves to chase a tennis ball-her fav thing to do.
@Barbara - a shock collar is never appropriate. You should be able train her to play without hurting other dogs. Is she in puppy kindergarten? If not, she should be. She needs to learn bite inhibition now or she will also bite kids and people. She should also learn not to pin other dogs - at Pink's training, they had a 3 second rule where they would not allow a puppy to pin other down for more than 3 seconds. These are active dogs and need to be trained as to which behavior is appropriate and which is not.
chloe seems to be free of giardia, thankfully. she's such a happy girl, tail goes 90mph all the time! however, she's strong willed, also. we have a 7 yr old shih tzu that when they play, she gets way too rough and hurts him at times. i can see a shock collar in her future. anybody know what age is appropriate for one? her parents are royal and sweetie pie. i'm pretty convinced that her gorgeous choc coat stays beautiful, due in part to the taste of the wild.
