We will be happy to see you at the Romp but I still think that you need to report the incident, with or without a description. I feel so terrible for you, but sadly this is one of the realities of being in a "dog park" environment. There are some owners who are clueless about their dogs. It speaks volumes about the owner that he didn't offer to help!

I'll still go to the romp, I definitely had no indication this would happen, the dog was running out of the water looking like all the other dogs running out of the water. I'm not sure I could give a good enough description to report it, I'm so mad at myself for that. I was just so focused on Gromit after it happened because he was crying and crying. I hope this never happens again, but if it ever does I'll be snapping a photo with my phone while I tend to my dog!

Jennifer, this is terrible! Did you report the incident to a ranger? If not, you most certainly should. Unfortunately this incident happened at Pt. Isabel-which is the site of our April 11 romp. We were just there on Thursday and the dogs were happily meeting and greeting. The only advice that I can give is to watch your dogs, as well as the others around you. If you see anything that might even remotely be construed to be aggression/out of line...get your dog, leash immediately, and leave the area. This is an incident that does require reporting and I urge you to do so! Sadly irresponsible owners can crop up anywhere! Chances are this individual is NOT going to come back to the park but if you could give a description to the rangers/police of both the person and the dog, it would at least be on the record. Poor Gromit! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Gromit was attacked today at Pt. Isabel, I'm so sad. We had come from puppy training, and we were going to take a walk. We had just passed the entrance area, and we were walking up along the water. Gromit was walking at the edge of the rocks, he is really interested in the water, but at 16 weeks old he doesn't have any experience. A large black dog came charging out of the water and just bit into his side, and then started attacking him. Gromit was crying horribly, and seemed to be panicking, and the guy pulled his dog off and said something like "he's OK, right? He just must have startled him." He took of like a bat out of hell while I was looking over Gromit. At first I thought he was OK, but his doodle fur is pretty thick. I kept him around for a few minutes so that I could try to turn the experience around and not have him leave in fear, but then I saw the blood coming through his fur. Another person walking their dog asked me if it was a large black dog, and when I said it was she told me a large black dog had just gone after a pug as well. The owner must be in some serious denial to not have the dog on a leash in a dog park, and to say he was startled by my dog. Umm, his dog charged at my puppy who was still at least 10 feet from him and up a hill. I'm am so upset, Gromit is clearly in pain, not acting like himself, the wounds are still bleeding, and very deep. The vet gave him a pain killer, antibiotics, and flushed out the wound. It all cost over $250.00, and I can only imagine how much more if it gets infected as I guess is common with this type of wound because they bite and then pull/tear creating a pocket under the skin where the bacteria from the mouth stays. Gromit has a pretty serious "pocket" with the wound. I have no doubt this dog would have killed him, and I'm so mad I didn't stop the guy and get his information. At the very least he should pay the vet bill. I feel sorry for the dog, the owner should be the one who knows better. It clearly was not an isolated incident, and totally unprovoked. Gromit wasn't even looking at him. I also think if Gromit were any smaller (he is 28 pounds at 16 weeks), he could have been killed by this. In addition to the bite wounds, he clearly is having trouble walking. I'm also having some anger management issues over how preventable this should have been. I don't fool myself into thinking these things are always preventable, dogs are after all animals, but in this case I think the owner was or should have been well aware that he needed to keep his dog under his control.

Hahaha!! I guess there are a lot of us "darn dog owners" these days! They should rename them "doggie pools"! ;)
I'll go out and get one today! Thanks for the info!
