Lucy was getting dirty ears even with me cleaning them twice a week with solution from the vet.

Our breeder suggested Thornit ear powder. Its from the UK. It cost about $40.00. A little goes a very long way. Lucy's ears have been WONDERFUL since then! I just wanted to share this info bc the powder cost less then a vet visit! We use the powder now once per week to maintain the good ears.

We use the solution after swimming to dry the ears. Hope this helps someone.

Never heard of this.  It's powder?  I squirt drops of liquid cleaner for Bexter's ears.  How do you do the powder?  Just sprinkle it in there?  I like this idea!  Thanks for the tip!!!  BTW - Lucy is adorable!
Thanks Becca for this info.   I just ordered some and it's got to come to Canada.   How long did it take for yours to arrive after ordering it?

Thank you for the update as we are just venturing back to swimming with Murphy and he has a history of chronic ear infections for most of his first year of life, due to swimming I believe. However, I plan on staying on top of this even more now, if that is even possible. He is 2 yr 8 months old and still backs away when he sees a cotton ball or any bottle that even looks like it might have ear solution in it.

I have the powder as well and am doing once or twice a week along with a Tea Tree Oil solution I made. Very diluted solution. I am using it for hot spots right now as well and so far so good for both ears and spots.

The breeders like this powder too.

It maybe took a week? It came much faster then I thought it would.

Yes, it is a powder. You take just a SMALL amount and put it in the ear ... Not in it but around

You rub the ear and then it will naturally fall in. It has worked WONDERS for Miss Lucy

My Maggie's ears are always dirty and sometimes get red and smelly. Vet has said its irritated but not infected. We clean them twice a week with a pad that has ear cleaning stuff on it. I wonder if this would help her.
Sorry for the slow reply... I have not been online much! We use the powder and we have had zero issues since using it. We LOVE it! Lucy had only one infection but was always messing w her ears and they would get dirty SO quickly with me cleaning them twice a week. Now they are clean and very easy to maintain.
I haven't had any ear problems yet but  I thought I'd get some THORNIT PWDR just to be prepared in case.   Question:   Should I be using the powder to prevent problems?   If so, how much should I use and would you mind telling me how exactly to do it?
Yes, use the powder to prevent peoblems, but once you have an infection it does no good. There have been a couple of recent discussions on this. One in the main forum stated by Joanne-spud and starlit, the other in the health group stared by me (about Winston's ears). Check those out if you want more info!

Our Lucy had a mild infection when we started using Thornit powder. Not the full blown infections she's been known to get, but a mild one, just the same. It seems her right ear ALWAYS had some level of infection, even after a round of antibiotic/antibacteria ear medicine. Thornit took about a month for Lucy's ears to get nice and pink and clean. That was with using a tiny amount every other day. It does work with infections.. it just takes time. I wouldn't use it on a full blown ear infection though. The time Thornit takes to work would make for some painful weeks for the pup.

I can't believe I'm just now seeing this discussion! We LOVE Thornit Powder too! Our Lucy's right ear has had multiple infections since she was a pup (and many vet visits). We had been using a liquid ear cleaner from the vet, but inevitably, if I forgot to clean her ears a couple days in a row, the infection would come back almost over night. I heard about Thornit on DK some time ago and looked into it. It took a bit longer to work effectively than what it took your Lucy, but once it kicked in it really kicked butt! I use Thornit once every 2-3 weeks now (and always after bathing) and don't have to fret over cleaning her ears every few days. I'm always amazed every time I look into Lucy's ears. They're always so nice and clean and pink! Its just such a change from what I use to find. Thornit is so effective, and easy to use, I wonder why its not available in the U.S.?
