Another Thought,
Assuming you brush in between groomings maybe you are splitting the ends with the brush/comb. Spud's hair seems to get damaged when DH does the brushing. His technique and the brush he uses... well I don't agree. The coat looked really dry, split, and wiry.

Helen,
Possibly adding EPO or Fish Oil to the dogs diet may help a dry coat? Do a search for EPO here on DK. This may help?? DUNNO?

Connor is an F1 goldendoodle and his shedding is negligible -- just a hair here or there visible on dark clothes. He rarely mats. When we adopted Connor @ almost 5 months, he was very red with darker ears and tail. He got lighter on most parts of his body and looked almost strawberry blonde. Now, at 3 he is getting darker in parts and is shaded from gold to red. I think his coat is combination fleece and hair.
Simon is an F3 Australian Labradoodle. He is spiral (curly) fleece, cream with apricot. Since Simon is only 16 months old, he has been going through the puppy-to-adult coat change. He mats where he still has puppy hair, but the adult spirals don't. I use grooming spray on him before brushing - Ice on Ice - and it makes brushing/combing much easier.
Both dogs shed hair when I brush and comb them, but not just falling out on its own.
Before I had Connor, I had a newfie who shed 24/7. His shedding season was 12 months a year. No matter how much I brushed or combed him, there were black tumbleweeds of hair all over the house. Compared to the newfoundland, the doodles are nothing to take care of. :-)

I don't think that my groomer knows everything. She just feels that the goldens she works with have a change between 3 and 5 years - perhaps it is more of what a groomer might notice rather than us. It may be limited to her grooming of a few goldens rather than a breed commonality. We also discussed that Clancy might have been malnourished and now that he is not, he might be 'catching' up. Her certainly has put on 8 pounds and I still feel ribs (appropriately).

Helen, Graciedoodle has developed a few dark red wiry areas recently that her owner, Nancie is trying to figure out. Perhaps it feels more wirey until it grows out more..... Ned's final part of his coat change - that went on forever - was some darker red curlier, coarser hairs on his back. Now it seems like they have grown out and don't stand out so much as coarser, curlier, or darker.

My almost 4 y/o mini F1b labradoodle is in the middle of a strange coat change, I have noticed over the last 4 months he has more if a wire type coat taking over and the softer coat he once had has started to disappear, it is almost like he needs to be stripped to remove th wire hair. Any thoughts, he doesn't shed and last time he had a mojor groom he was shaved rather than the usual scissor trim he had been having.

That just doesn't sound right to me. Why would a dog's coat change when they're that age? It doesn't happen with either of the parent breeds. Not to question your groomer, but I would sincerely doubt that any dog's coat is going to change after the age of 18 months. Maybe get thinner when they get really old, just like people, lol.

My groomer said that goldens have one more change between 3 and 5 years. We extrapolated that to Clancy. I don't think it is the mat kind of change, just a maturing of the fur. Clancy's coat is quite mixed with the red fur on his back and tail quite coarse and the white fur on his legs very soft . When brushing his back a comb goes right thru but when brushing his soft legs I need to work it a bit. Either way there are no mats.

Camilla...Banjo sounds just like Darwin. The Slicker brush fills up with his fur when brushed, we find the black fabric interior in one of our cars really "attracts" his fur....but all in all he really doesn't shed much.
Nancy - 2 yrs old and still having coat change?? I didn't know they were still changing at this point.

Clancy is a rescue so we don't know his exact birthdate but we were given March 17, 2008 by the rescue. The vet agreed then that he was about 2. If so he is 2 1/2. Because of his neuter date, he could have turned 3 in September.

Thought I would update on Darwin's shedding status. He doesn't seem to shed on our furniture or our carpet. In fact, I never see his hair anywhere, unless I am wearing black and cuddle with him, there are a few hairs that I can see on me, but it's not much at all. But after brushing him, I have hair ALL OVER me. it floats in the air and gets everywhere. Not sure if this means he is a light shedder.... or not a shedder... who knows?
