QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

Jane how often do you meet up with your trainer? Lucy is doing much better with the off command. I stand on her lead and she corrects herself each time she jumps. She is NOT doing well on the lead. She is so nervous and just wants to PULL the entire time. Before we leave for our walk I make sure she is quiet and calm in a sit position and then I will lead out the door. Then if she pulls I stop. If we are walking I will do a correction and then make sure the lead is loose. One plus ... We saw a dog off a lead. I knew she was nice. She was small too. Lucy just kept running in circles. I stopped and held Lucy so the dog could sniff her. Then Lucy got the point and then sniffed her. Then after about 2 minutes she was trying to play :) I fell like we are really doing well in most areas but the lead. My friend came over yesterday and taught her to roll over on command in about 5 minutes! It's so cute!

We were back at Petco for our training today.  That place is so perfect for working on Murphy's reactiveness.  He did extremely well in the store, and we had lots of practice with "sit for petting by a friendly stranger".  He doesn't seem to react at all to people anymore....he doesn't even get excited.  So, that's one hurdle that we're over.  Then we sat outside on the bench while people went in and out with their dogs.  My trainer also brought a friend's five month old Lab puppy (very high energy) to practice with.  Today we used treats as a distraction.  In the past Murph has been way more interested in the dogs than any treat.  The trainer told me I needed to find the strongest smelling high value treat I could.  So I went to the "doggie boutique" and bought some incredible expensive jerky, and that's what we used.  It worked for most of the dogs....I could distract him with the treat and keep him from even looking at the dog.  There were a couple of dogs though who were just too much for Murph...and the treats didn't work.  Again these were dogs who were lunging and clearly not under their owners' control.  The smaller ones that "yip" really seem to make Murphy react.  I feel like we're definitely making progress.  We're not quite there yet, but getting closer and closer.  The trainer also pointed out to me today that Murph may be getting a little "over focused" on me.  When I leave him with the trainer and he can't see me, he gets very nervous and anxious.  I need to think about how I can work on that.  I certainly don't want this to lead to separation anxiety.

You're really off to a wonderful start....and I'm SO glad that you like your trainer.  I think that's so important.  The picture is so cute.  Isn't it amazing how they know how to communicate with each other....the certainly speak their own language.  Thanks so much for sharing this great training news!

Oh, that was a GREAT idea taking her to the school!! Talk about a target rich environment! LOL!!

Right now Tara is only comfortable with dogs that are smaller than her although she got nervous with a 2 pound Yorkie the other day!!! It is weird because if she is with another nervous dog she becomes the bully and chases them!! But with more assertive dogs she hides or runs!!  Thanks for sharing the info. I'll put it into use next time I get a chance!!

I'll bet she was a tired girl after playing for 1.5 hours!!  I remember reading in one of my dog training books "A tired puppy is a GOOD puppy".  I guess that means they are too tired to get into trouble!!

Keep up the good work!

Since we went over to the other pups house, she said to have Kota on a lead. We went out in the back yard and took Lucy's lead off. Her tail was TOTALLY tucked under. Plus we had the joy of the dog behind us barking NONSTOP. She went around the yard for about 5 minutes and then we took Kotas lead off. Lucy gave him some warning clanks of her teeth. Totally normal. The trainer said let them work it out. They will know what they are doing. Then they finally sniffed. Poor Kota just wanted to PLAY!!! FINALLLLLY Lucy started jumping and the romping started. Funny thing is that LUCY ended up being the dominant one! Kota had to let her know a few times to back off! They romped for 1.5 hrs with maybe a 5 sec down time. Kota cried when Lucy left! :( I will say Lucy was very worn out and PERFECT for the rest of the day! HA! I even took her to my daughters school to practice off. I stood on her lead while all the kids pet her.

That is great news!!! I think MOST of us have a long way to go!! Im not sure that training actually ever ends! Tara is shy with other dogs too. What did your trainer say about how to properly introduce Lucy to them?
