Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

Oh my trainer is definitely coming with me. I'm not quite that brave.

Are you going INTO PetCo WITH your trainer or without?

We walked Guinness and Murph all through the neighborhood today. He was a very good boy. On Saturday we're going to PETCO! Heaven help me....

Julie, you can either start this as a separate discussion or you can add it to the December sit/stay assignment. Your goal would be to improve your sit/stays outside with distractions (you'd want to be a lot more specific than that...but that's the general idea). That would allow others in the group to provide input or ask questions. There are probably many of us working on this exact same thing.

Julie: You just have to start small. SO if he can give you a 1-2 minute sit stay IN the home, then only expect a 10 second sit stay OUT of the home to start. Then work up. Do it in your yard first and build up time. Do it on your front porch and build up time. Do it on the sidewalks and build up time. The method I use to train pretty much starts everything out of the house so right away you've taken care of the out-of-the-house teaching. But go places that are empty of people and dogs (large fields, empty sections of a large park, etc). Start from a very short stay and work up. Maybe start a discussion above if you want to get others to chip in their ideas or spend more time problem-solving. In your discussion that you start, be EXTREMELY descriptive in how you taught him sit-stay, how you enforce it, what you do if he breaks his stay, how far you go from him, where you stand, if you ever repeat your command, how much/what types of distractions he can handle in the house, etc. Give us a word video of his stays. Then if you can get a REAL video uploaded of you and him practicing a stay...even better!

Adina - I've been meaning to do this. My doodle is the 'perfect' dog in the home but get him outside with people and other dogs and he's a spaz! I'd like advice on how to get better stays (or a stay at all...) when outside. He follows me every where in the home and seems to really respect me and look up to me as his leader but I become irrelevant outside - real quick! THANKS!

C'mon everybody...let's hear your goals/plans and see some videos of your December Training Assignment progress. Even if you haven't gotten far. There is NO shame in changing your goal part way through if it is not working out. I know lots of you have Flip cameras. You can set those on a chair, bookcase, or tripod and film away =) Show us your sit stays even if it's just a 30 second, no distraction one! If you can get yourself IN the video even better. If video is not an option, just describe how things are going or where you are struggling. We will help each other!
