Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This weeks training challenge (Willow)

Started by Stacy. Last reply by Stacy Aug 8, 2019. 10 Replies

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

Oh Boca is plenty confident...she doesn't ask out of lack of confidence but out of daring and not wanting to miss out on something 'more fun' than sitting still ;-) Totally not my idea. I remember a trainer describing her training of one of her youngest English Pointers (who she called "the Devil"... this trainer is a breeder too) this way. Every training day she'd write about she'd do it from this point of view...of the dog asking questions when it broke stay/heel, etc. And her answers were always "Yes, even IF you're unsure about the big bad doggy over there..you STILL have to heel". Or "Yes, even if you think that bird needs to be chased, you STILL have to hold your stay." Or "Nope, 1 foot in front of me is NOT where you sit when we come to a halt in heeling." I loved it!

Oh I agree. Starlit does this too. I can see her look at me and ask. Of course, Spud, is too confident and does not do this very often at all, but Starlit, yes she asks :) I know what you are saying

She asks questions all the time about heel position and what passes for it. And questions about how long she has to sit stay and if she STILL has to sit stay even if there's a loud thing here or there or automatic doors opening near her or interesting people walking by. The answer is always yes, but she still has to ask to learn.

I love the idea that some behaviors equate to asking questions. Interesting thought.

Raining today but since we missed two training days in a row, we couldn't miss today. It seemed like heavy rain but it had lessened considerably by the time we got to... Home Depot! Yes, Home Depot. No grass to soak my feet with rain water, very close to home, and a good place for distractions where we can control how close we get.

Boca's not ready to go INSIDE of HD, but we heeled in the parking lot, loading area, and back and forth in front and past the automatic doors. Did sit stays in those areas as well. She did VERY well. Though she did ask a few questions and got some corrective answers, but overall I'd say she is learning it pays to obey.

Adina! You have exciting adventures ahead of you! This is wonderful!

I don't think there's any problem with him moving ahead. You want him to be challenged. Congratulations, Rooney.....skipping grades already!

Rooney was told today that he won't be in the AKC STAR Puppy Class. At puppy play group today the trainer saw Rooney do a few things so she gave him a few little tests and said that it would be a waste of money - he can already do the basics. Rooney is going to start a class this next Monday evening called "Beyond the Basics". We all know how smart our Doodles are. I wish I could say that I was the one that trained him in the basics but it was his breeder/trainer - Rooney stayed for 2.5 wks of training. Does anyone see any problem with moving ahead?

I think I will. I just have to decide WHICH dog to take...but not until Boca's farther along in training. It's too soon to decide yet.
