Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THESE TRAINING GROUP CGC WINNERS!  Please remember to post a picture of your Doodle whenever they complete any training designation so that we can continue to add to our collage.  If I missed anyone here, also please let me know.

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This weeks training challenge (Willow)

Started by Stacy. Last reply by Stacy Aug 8, 2019. 10 Replies

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

Well you know what they say, " One Leg At A Time"

( I don't think they say this... but it sounded good and it does come from somewhere). I vote to go, try it once, and have a GOOD time and experience.

With Rosco my most likely "flunk" opportunities will be heeling (on and off leash). He is awesome at holding still, not as great at moving faster than a snail. But Boca will be challenging to keep still and probably will be an excellent heeler.

Adina, I am very excited for you to go as far as you can with your doodles. Even if you decide to get only one leg, it would be quite an accomplishment.

Very exciting. Is it an all-breed show? That would mean 2 days and 2 possibilities to earn a leg. Yes, the recall is off leash. I think the biggest problem dogs have is not holding their "wait" while you walk across the ring. Most dogs at this level are all too happy to rocket back to you when you call.

Major flunk opportunities:

Sits and Downs
Moving on stand for exam

Welllll...the catch is I'd only be able to get ONE leg toward the title. You have to 'pass' with three different judges at three different shows. And I HATE traveling for such things so I'm not too hopeful.

OMD, Adina. That is so exciting. If anybody can do this...it's YOU. You can lead the way for the rest of us. I've got to believe that Rosco is so close to being ready for something like this....maybe Boca too. I'm off to your link too. Can you imagine it.....Doodles with Companion Dog titles. I LOVE IT!

Oh Oh Oh... this is awesome. This is incentive. This is just what a lot of us need. On my way to your link to read more. You know, eventually the mid west does catch on... but we are 3-4 years behind. So when Spud is 12 I'll for sure be ready to enter him. Congratulations Adina..... I hope you sign up. Keep us informed

I just found out that our LOCAL Kennel Club will be allowing mixed breeds in their obedience trials this coming April. This makes me super excited and super nervous because it means that one of the BIGGEST reasons for me stalling in training was the fact I had no more 'tests' to take with my dogs to keep me plugging away. But now I can actually set a goal. But that is nerve wracking because it means more work! Isn't that neat to dream of though? Either Rosco or Boca MIGHT get a leg toward a Companion Dog title !!! That's the lowest obedience level. Stuff they'd have to do is here: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/cdtitle.html -- I believe the recall is off leash and there are a lot of things happening around!

I guess that doesn't make any sense, does it? We have been working on greetings off leash and with people that we know. But when we are meeting people at the mall he is so excited that I never used to bother. It seems ridiculous now that I saw it...

We took Darwin to our local outdoor mall this week. We knew there would be lots of people and distractions there and we wanted to do some training. We have been working with him on his sit stay during greetings so I was hoping to work on it more there. When people approach him to pet him he never jumps but usually wags his tail like crazy, and is very distracted, sniffing and turning around, going between their legs etc. I rarely tell him to do a sit stay when we are greeting people because he doesn't jump and I figured that he wouldn't listen to me anyways. (bad me!)

Well, we got stopped by about 15 people and he sat perfectly every time! Two of them were people with really young kids, under 3. He sat calmly and was very gentle with them. Everybody commented on how mellow he was. I don't think I've been giving him enough credit. All I had to do was give him a chance and practice, and he got it!
