Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THESE TRAINING GROUP CGC WINNERS!  Please remember to post a picture of your Doodle whenever they complete any training designation so that we can continue to add to our collage.  If I missed anyone here, also please let me know.

Entering a dog show

Started by Stacy. Last reply by GBK Aug 21, 2019. 32 Replies

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This weeks training challenge (Willow)

Started by Stacy. Last reply by Stacy Aug 8, 2019. 10 Replies

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

I have a 12 week old ALD "grand dog" that visits frequently.  Oliver is 8 and tolerates the puppy play fine with no issues at all.  Ivy on the other hand was a bit stand offish (as she is with all…Continue

Ricki! ROFL! I am not as interesting as a dog's butt either. Sounds pathetic, but true!

I think you're right Jane. There is no way a human can be more interesting than a dog's butt!!! That is one of many reasons we do not see that trainer anymore. I'm getting more success with the "just because I said so" approach. :)

Donna, we've been working every day for two weeks to keep his attention on me. It works most of the time, but sometimes something just "sets him off". The hard thing is trying to figure out what distractions are going to do that...of course, ultimately he needs to refuse ANY distraction. That's what we're working towards. Ricki, how does one even begin to compete with a dog butt???? He's going to have to learn to do it, "just because I said so". HAHAHA.

A trainer we had once told us that we had to make ourselves more interesting to Tara than another dog's butt!!! I'm still working on being more interesting than a dog butt...:(

My problem is that Quincy is too busy looking around and not paying attention to me. If I can figure a way to keep his attention on me I think he will do so much better. Does Murphy pay attention to you or does he have the same condition as Quincy, DAD, doodle attention disorder.

Thanks for the encouragement, "training buddies". Karen, he's either incredibly brilliant or "not the sharpest knife in the drawer". The jury's out.....

Yes he will, Jane. He will learn to heel, don't you worry!
Comment by Lucy & AnnaBelle's Mom on October 30, 2010 at 1:22pm
Jane --- When DH was working with Lucy on heel, she was very treat motivated so he kept puppy treats in the pocket of his pants on the side where she was to heel. Lucy would just walk along looking at his pocket. He would say good heel and reach in and get her a treat.

Of course he'll learn to heel, Jane. He's a very smart dog. A stupid dog wouldn't be able to frustrate you like this, rofl!

My Murphy is the strongest willed dog that I have ever encountered.....thank goodness he's so cute. HE WILL LEARN TO HEEL, HE WILL LEARN TO HEEL, HE WILL LEARN TO HEEL!
