Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THESE TRAINING GROUP CGC WINNERS!  Please remember to post a picture of your Doodle whenever they complete any training designation so that we can continue to add to our collage.  If I missed anyone here, also please let me know.

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This weeks training challenge (Willow)

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

I need a good kick in the whosie. I've had the names of three recommended trainers sitting here for a week or so and I haven't called any of them. I have to find time for my own dog, lol. JD is continuing to sit automatically at stops on walks, and when someone comes to the door and he starts barking, once I get there he will now back away from the door and sit on command. That's about it.

First I have to confess we have been very lax with our training. Quincy is usually good walking on leash, he sometimes goes to the end of the leash but doesn't really pull. Now we have to get back to training. The last 3 days on our walk, we worked on his heel (for some reason he thinks this means walk around me, sit on my left side and get a treat, I can't imagine why). He did well with the heel but his autosit is not so auto. After our 3 days of practice, he will sometimes sit on his own and always with a slight reminder, if he sees my hand start to move towards his rear, down he goes. I am trying to teach him to autosit without using verbal clues. We passed a lady walking a dog who though he was just being lazy, I explained we were in training mode. It was at this point Quincy tried to make a dash to say hi to her dog. She said "you've got a lot of work to do". She's right, we do.

Way to go Zack and Gavin!! Wooo Hooo!!! We are at a stand still here. I pulled a muscle in my back and it is all I can do to get her brushed let alone work on any serious training. The best I have done is practice her down stays for longer periods of time since that doesn't require much effort on my part!! Nothing amazing to report though...hopefully we will be back at it soon!

We had a fantastic walk tonight, Loose lease almost all of the time. Gavin totally ignored the Husky Bros. and shook off an encounter with a very agressive Pekanese and a very apologetic owner. Plus...6! autosits!!

Worked at bringing Zack to my left side at a sit position after a stay at a distance. Put him in a sit stay position and walked 10 paces. Called and stopped him in a sit position at my right front leg. Put leash behind the back of my legs at the knees and held snug with my right hand in front of my left knee. Gave the here and pointed to my left side, then take one stride back with right leg. This pulls him up and you can pull him into position with your right hand. After four days of short work sessions he will respond on command

Is anyone training this week? What did you train and how did it go? How did you feel about it? If you really wanted to train and couldn't/didn't how come? Remember there are no judgments in this group. Start a discussion.....

Thank You All For Your Support! :) This has been a wonderful and rewarding experiance.

Now to answer the Question:
To Call A Dog from a Down/Stay--is taught only in United Schutzhund Clubs --Or Police Dog/German Shepard Dog Training ( I think that is the name of this dog club). We trained with Police Dogs so this is why the difference.

To Call A Dog from a Sit/Stay--AKC Standards Only

That is the difference in training methods. That's All. I just want the dog to COME when I call them :)
