Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

Entering a dog show

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This weeks training challenge (Willow)

Started by Stacy. Last reply by Stacy Aug 8, 2019. 10 Replies

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

I use "Okay" but I'm trying to discipline myself to do a more formal release with Rosco by calling him to heel, taking a couple steps, coming to a halt and then releasing him. Or at LEAST coming back to his right side and giving the release that way--instead of calling out to him wherever he is with the OK release. Then it's not just the word but the context.

The release word I always used in the past is "FREE".
I'd love a discussion on other people undermining your training efforts...especially when those people live in your home. My adult DD is a big problem in this regard.

Sounds like good discussions Tara.
Jane: this group really has flourished...GOOD WORK!

Sure, I'd be interested, Ricki. I think one topic may be what are you using as verbal and/or hand signals for commands (a little broader than just the release). A second topic could be what are the things that undermine your training efforts...could be people or other external factors that "get in the way" of success with your Doodle. Do you mind adding these discussions?

I have a couple other training issues that I am wondering if others have as well. If so perhaps we could start a discussion about one or both. 1)Does anyone else have problems with a person/persons who are what I call anti-dog whisperers and tend to either intentionally or unintentionally undermine your training efforts? 2) I am curious as to what others of you use as a release command. We have always used "okay" which has gotten us into problems a few times when the word was used in another context and Tara released herself. I know ANY word can be used but I am curious what others are using successfully without this type of misunderstanding happening. Any interest in these topics?

Every success deserves a recognition, Karen and Jack! We've got another "success" almost ready to celebrate....right Ricki & Tara. I think you're next.

Oh, wow! I don't know if such a small success deserved such a nice banner, but we will definitely take it! Thank you, we feel very honored!
On this morning's walk, he sat at every stop without a verbal command!
