Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

Retractable leashes are NOT safe. They are not training the dog not to pull, you are just letting the leash out.  Just my opinion.  We tried the gentle leader harness and it didn't do any better than provide a snack for the dog we had wearing it. :-]

Gentle leader worked wonders for us. Took a while to get Denali used to it, she used to roll around trying to get it off. I grew up with a Lab with a neck of steel, we tried everything from choke to prong collars. Can't believe how much better walking is with the gentle leader.

In addition to the gentle leader, I spent a lot of time with Nali as a puppy getting a good "walk with me" or heel type behavior with a treat in my hand. I also prefer to have a short leash (6 ft) to easily issue corrections. I still give her a treat every now and then for a great sustained "walk with me".

Pulling On A Leash: Have any of you used a Thunder Leash? If so, did it work to keep your doodle from pulling on the leash? Is there anything else that is better?
Thanks!

Hi Jen. We have an 8 month old Aussiedoodle. Several things in your comment concern me. I would not say that the demeanor you described us normal. A healthy, well socialized Aussiedoodle pup would not behave like that. Have you had him checked by your vet to ensure he doesn't have any health concerns? If not, I would do that asap. If he's healthy, he may not have gotten a lot of socialization from his breeder. As for potty training, please please do not run his nose in his "accidents". That is an outdated method no longer recommended. He is too young to be independently potty trained. You will need to help him by taking him out on a schedule. If you aren't crate training, I'd recommend that as well. There is plenty of info on here and the Internet on crate training as well as positive methods of house training. Lastly, just as an FYI, you wouldn't be able to get papers on an Aussiedoodle from any of the recognized groups like AKC or CKC as they are considered a mix and not recognized as a purebred.

Jen, there is a lot to cover here, so this really should be a discussion in the group rather than just a comment.  If you move it to a discussion you will get a lot more helpful feedback because more people will see it.

My family just welcomed a 10wk old Aussiedoodle into our family. He is awesomely loved by all 4 children, as well as my husband and I. He didn't have any papers, which doesn't matter to us because we just wanted a family pet, not any show dog, or one to be used for breeding. We call him Bo. :)
We have had him going on 3 days now. His whining as ceased, but seems somewhat withdrawn. I will sit down across from him, and tell him to come here or something, and he will just stare at me, then turn his head away, and lay down with his face covered and facing the opposite direction. Is this normal for a 10wk puppy that just came to their new home? Also, he is not house trained whatsoever. Everytime he pees or poop on the floor, I do what I've always known and stick his nose towards the accident, then immediately take him outside in the grass. Is this method efficient for this breed? This is our very first Aussiedoodle, and I have done quite a bit of research online about this breed. But it's always better to talk to people who actually have them as pets. My 4 children are young, and I want to make sure I train the puppy correctly to avoid any damaging effects he may do when he's full grown. Thank you all for your time in reading this.

I love this....I find these little reminders of my Dad to be like "visits" from him.
