I have to admit to total confusion. My problem is getting toys out of Mitzi's mouth with out giving her a treat. Is this opposite training?

I'm making progress with Hold It. Penny will now cleanly hold a stuffed star for 7 seconds!

Jaime you have to go back a few steps and click for the first second the toy is in her mouth...then treat. Then 2 seconds hold...then treat... Then 3 seconds...and so on until she is holding it for a bit. Don't even add the cue word until you can pull on the toy from both ends and not have her give it to you. Just be sure you are timing your click so it is WHILE she is holding it.

I've had no success with hold too. Any suggestions would be great! I started by having Penny retrieve a toy and bring it back. Before letting her give, I would wait and say hold it. She plays toss with the toy in excitement, trying to figure out what would get the reward. Bad timing on my part rewarded the toss and I can't correct it.

Thank you. I am hoping to learn how to really get her interested in good behavior. If teaching tricks works, all the better! We realized too late that I was
"Pavlovian" training Mitzi. She would take things she should not have; in order
to get them out of her mouth I would give her a treat. How silly is that! She probably thought she was supposed to take whatever she wanted after all, she
was getting rewarded for it.

I started changing that behavior and am having some success. She is now 18 months old and cooperating much better for me. She does learn fast so I am
very interested in learning all I can to help.

Lucy sounds like Mitzi's twin! They are sooooo smart!

Sally, I hear ya! I've decided leave it is really a bartering system... since I trained Lucy to leave it and I would give her a treat or something else to play with.. now, I say leave it and she comes to me and paws.. if I don't give her a treat or something else.. she goes back to what I asked her to leave. Sometimes I think she's manipulating me.. LOL

This looks like a really good group to join. Now if only we could teach Mitzi to leave the poisonous buffo toads in our back yard alone. She understands "Leave It", but her retriever instincts seem to over ride the command.
