I have been taking Oliver to be groomed like every other month since he was a tiny pup, and he loves to go to the groomer. Today I did not pick him up, my husband did, and he paid them $70.00 for the grooming. Now the last time I took him, it was $65.00 and because it takes a good deal of time to do Ollie now, he weighs 67 lbs. now and is quite tall, I don't think this is really a lot? Am I wrong? But right now with out business the way it is, this might be too much for me....He gets bathed, hair trimmed on face and all around body and under feet, around the rear, and around the underbelly and his ears. He looks so great, I really hate to say anything about the cost, but it keeps going up everytime I take him lately. Do you think it is wrong if I say something to them? I have used this groomer for a lot of years with my other dogs. I am just wondering what you guys pay when you take your dogs for grooming....Thanks, Cheryl

It is interesting how they come up with the pricing. I once inquired at Petsmart and they said for pricing, you look a GoldenDoodle up as a Golden Retriever which was like $70. Thinking I got lucky because they said as a Golden Retriever vs. a Standard Poodle so I said, wow, how much is a Standard Poodle then and she said $55. Didn't make any sense to me, so we went elsewhere! Gotta think a Standard Poodle would be much harder to groom than a Golden Retriever!
That makes no sense at all; poodles of any size are much harder to groom than Goldens! I paid more to have my miniature poodle groomed than I do for Jack...20 lbs VS 85 lbs!
Petsmart is the worst...their prices are high and their groomers are usually inexperienced.
Once at Petco they nicked Rex in several places. Never again!
I pay $60 plus a $10 dollar tip for Buddy who is 60 lbs, and $45 with a $7 dollar tip for Kona who is 33 lbs. I only take them in for a clipper cut every 4 months or so and do everything between that time myself. I have all I need to do it myself, but have been too chicken to try the clippers myself yet :) We are in Vegas and I don't think these prices are extremely out of range, and the pups to like the groomer, even afer all the ear hair pulling..... Kona grows another dog in those ears!!!!
I pay about $70. for the works. However I make as certain as I can that I have the boy mat free before he goes. We only have him done every 3 - 4 months. I finally have a groomer I like, that is, she does shave him!
There may be regional differences in pricing too.
I take Peri to Dogtopia and it is $55 (I think for 20-50 pounds, but increases to $70 for larger). They don't accept tip and did a great job. She was trimmed all over - had the complete works done.
I think $70 sounds okay; however, you should certainly ask about the price increases and if that will continue. Definitely ask them.

As far as the comments on Petsmart and Petco: IMO they seem to always be overpriced and have inexperienced folks. My friends have some poodle mixes that get shaved down each and every time - they end up looking uneven. Also they have received infections from nails getting clipped, etc....I won't take Peri there.
I pay $40-$45 to have mine scissor cut,,they are both small. My son pays $70-$80 to have his 55 pound GD groomed.
Ringo (40 lb.) has gone every two mos. w/no matts for a scissor cut and I paid $95 +tip the last time....too much. She said she had to give him breaks (he's still a puppy) so it takes a long time. I was hoping to stretch it to every three mos. when he gets older but now he just started the matting stage so we'll see...
Wow...I must be getting a bargain. The first couple times Chewie went he just got a bath and the feet, fanny and face special. This also included nails trimmed and ear hair plucked. This was $32. Last week he went...I felt he needed a little trim all over as he was getting very long and unkempt looking. I think she cut off about an inch along with everything mentioned above...$34. He hasn't had any matts yet. I know a bigger dog would cost more...he is 23 lbs at almost 8 months. I know at 25 lbs their price increases, but even so, compared to all the other posts, this is "dirt" cheap...LOL. They do a good job also. I live in a suburb...Metro Detroit, so Mid-West prices I'm sure are somewhat less than east of west coast, but still...
We pay about $70 to get Dex groomed (we groom Kirby ourselves because he is not a big fan of the electric clippers). They take about 3-4 hrs with Dex so I can understand the cost, but it still seems so high to me (I pay $30 for my own haircuts!!). So to make the cost more bearable we get him cut less often (once ever 3-4 months) and have him cut short to make the cuts last longer. I actually like the shorter look on them too.
I have a groomer that comes right to the driveway in a cube van - she has everything she needs in there from a hydraulic table to the bath tub. So awesome. Anyway, she charges $60 an hour, and Toby takes 1 1/2 hours. She does a complete brush out, cut, bath, dry, ears, nails, sanitary....everything. I get him done about every 2 1/2 months, and try to keep him brushed out well in between. The way I look at it is that she's just trying to earn a living, and it is very convenient and far less stressful for Toby than leaving him somewhere. Toby is around 70 pounds, so that seems like a fair price. Plus, she is patient and kind, and doesn't fault me if I miss brushing out a matt. :)
We also use a mobile groomer....and I certainly agree...much less stress on Comiskey and Beemer...Comiskey had a bad experience with a groomer and this one has worked well for us...both Comiskey and Beemer are around 30 lbs. (F1 minis) we pay $60.00 plus a $10.00 tip for each dog...
