Cagney was running in a field with a manhole covered by a grate in the middle of it... it was mostly covered with snow... he was running very fast when he stopped just in time so he did not go on top of it... he avoids all these covers at all times... does anyone else's Doodle do that too? Funny how they know not to go on them... not like they would fall through it but they don't know that ....
Darwin does avoid them if he can see one and I'm glad. There is one around where I live that is really wide. His paw could easily slip into it, and at a run that would be dangerous. we are always on the lookout for them!
Guinness always walks around them too. I've never been able to figure out why though, because he will climb up on the bottom "shelf" of the carriages at Petco and lie down. To me this is even more of a "grate" than those manholes, so I don't get it. He has to work hard not to fall through the Petco carriage, but it doesn't seem to bother him in the least. Crazy....who can figure them out.
It's not a bad instinct. Every year in New York there are stories of dogs shocked by electrcal shorts, caused by snow melting chemicals damaging underground wires. A woman was even killed in a similar situation. Animals usually won't walk where they could catch a paw or leg. Cow and deer grates work on that principle. They really are pipes covering pits dug across roads or driveways.
Duncan avoids all of these too. When I take him into Manhattan he will walk around all basement trap doors, subway grates, manhole covers etc. But he will also want to say hi to all 8 million people that are walking around us. He thinks they're all there to see him.
One of my dogs stepped into a storm drain once and got a nasty cut on her foot when she tried to pull out from the rusty and dirty grate. Luckily I was able to rinse the sore quickly and it didn't get infected. Those storm drains are a severe danger to all dogs, so watch out :(
Lucy doesn't care, but Sophie will not walk on them. We were at a park one time and there was a grate about a foot wide cut in clean across the road. She wouldn't budge, There were 3 of them for some reason in this campsite area we were in. After walking around them a few times I finally got her till she would jump over them.
My goldendoodle Peri has no fears. She runs straight across grates, manholes...you name it. Taquito the chihuahua, however, is very afraid and would run into the street and into a car to avoid a grate. I have to pick him up to keep him from doing that!!!
ABSOLUTELY! From the very first walk we went on, Fozzy stopped at the first grate he ever saw, sniffed at it and went around it. He always avoids the grates......he may be oblivious to everything else, but always knows where the grates are!
