I go a bit mad when it is time to name a pet. My mind just goes around and around until I have found the one that feels right. Sometimes, it happens immediately--but other times, it is a struggle. part of the struggle is finding a name that my husband will agree to--I like cute-sy names and he likes formal names like David or simple names like Bob --problem is we know people with both of those names!

With Mattie, it was easy--she had already been called Addie by her previous owner and my husband wanted to call her Matilda--if I called her Mattie,  we'd have a formal name and a cute-sy name! Lyric was even easier--she had also been named already and we didn't want to change it and confuse her--her full name is Lyric Contata and yes, hubby uses the whole thing. I often call her "Leery"--there is the cute-sy thing again.

So, now to the new puppy--I am keeping one of the males from Lyric's litter. He has such pronounced black and white colors that my breeder (who is using him in her breeding program as a stud dog) wanted to name him something that has the idea of a piano...like Piano man. But she also likes Italian names--so I came up with Ebony and Ivory in Italian--Ebano Avorio. What a handle for a 4 pound pup!

The breeder likes it and of course, my husband plans to call the poor dog the entire name (which will take some practice...) And me? Well, i think I will call him "Rio"! It's cute-sy! (and we live on a river--so there you go) Other pups in the litter with names from their new owners are "Rafi" and Zeus".

There are some great names for doodles on this site--I'd love to know how everyone came up with them--do they have a special meaning or are they just cute?

Here's Rio!

Rio is an adorable pup. You are going to continue to have a busy household. Enjoy him.
LOL! I didn't know there was a name group--I will check that out! Albus is a great name for a great dog!
I didn't mean to put Rio's picture in as an attachment, so here it is again for those of you who don't want to have to open it.

So cute as a puppy - bet he'll be stunning as an adult!!!

By the way, as a baby, Sedona was much more apricot/reddish than she is now.  We named her after the reddish, pinkish rock formation around Sedona, Arizona.

adorable!
Love the name Albus, huge fan =)
Rio is great! Love his markings :)
So cute! I LOVE his name! I've told my story before, so I don't want to bore anyone, but Tori's name was kind of picked by her... we had 3 names and laid them across the floor and let her 'pick'... we did many trials and Tori was it... her name was originally chosen because it means "elegant" in Abirigonie (she's half aussie)- and we think she's 'elegant' :o)

Rooney says to Rio "Partis Rule"!   All my animals are named after old movie stars.  We have had Crosbey (after Bing - I dreamed this name and then found "him"), Bougart (then we got Humphrey the cat) and now Rooney after Micky Rooney not that nasty Andy Rooney who I have met and the man is a total grump!

Rooney is so cute, too! Couldn't be after Andy...You need a "Judy" now or "Garland" LOL!
We knew that we wanted to name our pup after a scientist or influential person that we respect. We considered Pasteur, Curie, Mendel and Mozart for a girl. And for a boy, Newton, Kepler, Django, Sagan, Galileo, and Darwin. When we saw him, we just knew that Darwin fit him perfectly!

My husband named Ned after a former student (and I thought he was honoring moi! by naming him my initials - duh!). When deciding on a re-name for Clancy we opened it up to dk members for suggestions.  There were many that one or the other of us liked very much - Clancy was even Hula for a day, but in the end we went with Nancie Casey's suggestion - her son's name.  It suited him perfectly!

I love the name RIO.  Wish I had thought of it for one of my guys.

i wanted a name with the letter d. My husband, grandmother and cat have all passed away and they were all D names....so i figured i'd probably have to say goodbye to this doodle too at some point. (sad that at 37 years old i even think so morbidly). From there i was trying to find something "australian" to honor his australian labradoodle breed. I first came up with Drover....but noone really liked it. Then as i watched a commercial for Dunkin Donuts (everybody runs on Dunkin) i realized that my pup was the color of my coffee after adding cream. So i named him Duncan (i liked that spelling better). And I call him Duncan Donuts all the time. His name is totally fitting. I also call him Duncalicious, Dunkachino and duncan doodle:)
