Sydney....after being told we could loose Sydney we hope she may be coming around!

Our Vet made us aware several weeks ago that we could loose Sydney after we left her at the Vet several times early in April.  We were led to believe after our first visit to the Vet that Syndey's illness was due to bully sticks we gave her two days before she became very ill.  However, after weeks of serious side effects and lots of research and emails with others on DK, we think Sydney's illness may have been triggered by over vaccination several days before she became so ill.  Sydney was given the DHPP and Rabies (too soon) vaccination at the same time.  The Vet would not disagree that they over vaccinated Sydney but the Vet would not admit to the problem was caused by the vaccinations.  Sydney is still on several medications and is being taken off of one med at a time.  Sydney seems to be feeling a little better and just started barking a bit and playing with her toys a bit this past weekend.  It has been over a month since she was hospitalized.  We still are not sure what caused Sydney to become so ill but we are still hoping that Sydney will be back to our old Sydney!  Thank you for all of your notes and concerns about Sydney!  We love her LOTS and it has broken our hearts to see her suffer so much!

This is really good news and it seems that the effect of the cause, regardless of which it is, is starting to decrease and she is regaining her old self. This is a good message too for those of us who have concerns regarding over vaccinations and spacing them out when they are to be done. I am leaning towards titers now that my two have had all of their shots. Expensive, but as you have seen, it could be the cause of worse problems health wise and money wise. SO happy for you all.

That's really good news about Sydney and hopefully she is on her way to full recovery.  Her illness throws up lots of questions though.  Naturally the Vets are not going to admit that the vaccinations given so soon after each other are to blame lest they are slapped with some sort of legal claim.  It does seem however that this may be the likely cause.  It is a warning to all of us to make sure our vets space any vaccinations over a period of weeks.  I wish Sydney and you all the best and look forward to pictures of her running around like her old self soon.

oh no!  I missed the original post about her being sick... I am glad she is doing better!  These vets.. so frustrating!  We will keep her in our thought for a continued recovery!!

I agree Nicki, can you just hear a vet saying "Oh Yes, this happens often after I give the vaccinations together, oops. so sorry."  That would be a lawsuit waiting to happen. But it seems like this can't be the only case of it they have seen or even read about. Guess we have to be our canine patient advocates as well and ask for them to be spaced out just in case.

I'm so happy to hear that she is doing so much better!  I've heard of the vaccination issue but your said something about "bully sticks".  I thought those were supposed to be safe.  I give them to Rooney all of the time and it hasn't seemed to make him sick.  Should I discontinue their use (he gets them from PetCo - the triple braided ones)?  He does get shin bones on occasion but if we take the bully sticks away then what is left to chew on?  He doesn't like antlers.

As a rule of thumb I do not give any treats made outside of the USA and bully sticks seem to mostly be made in other countries. I have ordered them online, made in USA. There is so much that is not monitored in other countries that go into the animals the sticks are made of and there is the formaldehyde issues as well. Murphy threw up his last bully stick so I think we can live without them here.

Sending our love to Sydney!! I hope your vet realizes the error of his/her ways.....I really believe that vaccines absolutely have the ability to do things like this...our vet took all of our pups' vaccinations very slowly, which at the time seemed annoying because of course you have to pay for every visit, but in the long run it was the right move.  I sincerely hope Sydney continues to feel better!!!   Seamus and Stella send many kisses to Sydney!

I have to ask & sorry if it was on  previous post, how did Sydney get shots too soon?  Don't they have her records & know when she is due for shots?  I was just confused by that part, or did you switch vets?
