As I've mentioned before, my hubby works overnights so Brinkey will often sleep away the morning by my husband's side... but by noon he's ready to break free from the room and watch his big screen TV (aka: the 6 large picture windows in our sunroom). Well today, my husband called me after waking up and said "it's 5pm and Brinkley is still by my side.  I hope he's okay."  I got home at 6 to find a very lethargic dog.  At first we thought he was just sore because he swam hard yesterday but as minutes passed I noticed his eyes looked glassy and they glazed over.  When I called his name he didn't respond... he just sat there looking like he had fallen asleep sitting up.  And then he started drooling.  He hardly greeted me at the door when I arrived home.  I brought his water dish to him and made him drink--- which he did-- but it was obvious he hadn't touched his food or water all day.  After a few more minutes, I threw him into my car (P.S. I bought a new crossover three days ago.  I now have a doodle-mobile! It's a Nissan Rogue) but I digress.

They said he was dehydrated and that his bacteria levels were high.  They said a lot of times a dog's bacteria levels can elevate and aid in dehydration if the water's bacteria levels are high.  That coupled with some gulping of sandy salty beach water dehydtrated him.  He's now pumped full of liquids (he has a water camel hump now that will disperse water to his body for the next 12 hours.)

He's sleeping but already seemed a little more perky by the end of the visit.  WHen I took him to the vet I had to lift him in and out of the car b/c he didn't have the energy to jump... but when we left the vet he got in and out on his own.

Phew.

This is scary Heather, especially since you go ofter I wonder what made this time different. And you already said it wasn't a hot day either. So wierd. Our doodle Murphy lived at the beach like a surfer dood his first summer and gulped so much salt water I thought he'd explode and never had a problem. And it was always hot in Fla. Our problem with the beach was he'd get out of the water and rub his ears along the wet sand and then got ear infections that took us about 6 months of agressive treatments to control. Lots of bacteria in the sand, so that would be the only caution I could offer you. So glad he is feeling better today. Love the camel hump!  I keep syringes and needles on hand for that very reason and we have had a few camel backs here from time to time too.
OMD I would of freaked. I am always afraid of not knowing when to go to ER or not!!! Thank goodness he is better!

Wow, scary stuff. Glad he's ok!

Awe, poor Brinkley! I'm glad he's doing better and that you reacted so quickly in getting him to the vet. He's lucky to have both of you as parents.
I am so glad that Brinkley is much better.
Very scary.  Obviously you knew in your heart that it was serious and did not hesitate to get him to the vet.  Good thinking.  Hope he continues to bounce back quickly.
How frightening! I'm glad he's doing better...
Super scary!  Here in FL right now it is front page news that the bacteria levels are too high at the beaches right now and they are warning people.  I don't know what causes the levels to get too high but this is a great warning to the rest of us.  I know that when Stuart swims in the pool he drinks a lot of pool water.  The pool guy says it won't hurt him but  . . .         So happy to hear that Brinkley is on the mend!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you took Brinkley to the vet and hope he continues to improve every day.  How scary!
glad you took him to the vet and didn't just wait to see how he was... hugs
I echo the sentiment that we are glad to hear he is feeling better. Phoebe was dehydrated once and needed the subcutaneous fluids, too.  The 'camel hump' was so hard for me to deal with (it made me so sad).  Hoping he feels even better today!

So glad you got him to the vet right away, nice vet. Did they know why this time would be any different than the rest of the swim trips? Do you think he'll go back? Poor thing! On another note congrats on the doodle-mobile nice ride Brinkley!

Feel better fast!
