Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi Everyone,
We got our little guy Teddy from a breeder close by at exactly 8 weeks. He felt a bit boney but I did not think it was anything to worry about. On Saturday we took him to the vet for his first round of shots (he is 10wks now) and he weighed in at just uner 13lbs. Our vet said he should be closer to 20lbs and is concerned that he might have a parasite/worm or worse an underlying internal issue. We put Teddy on special ID kibble mixed with ID wet food and he has been eating a ton and now is roughly 14-15 lbs. Should I be worried about his weight?

Sorry forgot to mention Teddy is a Standard F1B Goldendoodle
Did the Vet do a fecal, or draw blood?
Soon, and very soon I am sure, you will be hearing form Karen, our Food Group Guru, about why the food you are currently feeding, ID kibble and wet, is NOT a good choice and why. You should join the Food Group, it's a wealth of information.
There are all sizes of doodles, even in the Standard F1b, for instance Daisy (same F1b goldendoodle) is 70#s at 2 years but there are some that are bigger and some that are smaller.
I am happy to hear that he has gained a few pounds. What WERE you feeding him prior?
He is a beautiful boy, by the way!
Thanks for the reply Lisa
Yes our vet did do a fecal but did not find a parasite or worms however he has asked for a second sample and gave Teddy de-worming pills. Bloodword has not been conducted but he said this is the next step if Teddy does not put on more weight. He rcommended the ID but prior Teddy was eating Nutro small-bites puppy.
He still feels a bit boney but has been putting on weight and I really think our vet could be overreacting a bit. Do you think 14lbs is severly underweight for 10wks?
Jordan, I just looked up Daisy's weight at 10 weeks, it was 13 lbs and then we took her again in 2 weeks (she had hookworm when she came to us) and she weighed 20 lbs. I agree that he may have over reacted slightly! AGAIN Daisy is now 70 lbs.
Daisy was fed Orijen but she became uninterested in it, we then switched to Acana and hasn't eaten anything else since.
My two girls are standard f1b and were 11 lbs at 11 weeks. Sounds like he's right on schedule, unless she expects him to be bigger because he's male.
My big guy, Seamus, is now 86 pounds at 2 years old. He was the "runt" of his litter (I beg to differ lol) and was on about the same sizing scale as your Teddy. If he was 20 lbs at 10 weeks, according to your vet, I think that would be HUGE!! They do put on weight quickly and as long as he is eating and going to the bathroom on a regular schedule, I wouldn't be worried. I would, however, push for the vet to do bloodwork just to check....I'm surprised he didn't do bloodwork automatically.
at around 10 weeks Cooper (an australian labradoodle) was 16lbs. She is now 60lbs and on the skinny side. Doodle puppies are bony - its the poodle in the I think! I think Teddys vet over-reacted. Nutro is not a great food, and is full of fillers, so that may be why he weighs slightly less than manybe he should (but nothing to worry about id say). The vet food is even worse than Nutro, especially because of the high price you pay for it. ID food is made with by-products (not the type of animal flesh we would eat). corn, wheat, soy etc that just fills them up, creates large poops and doesnt give then nutrients. I appreciate all of helpful comments from everyone! Most seem to think the ID is a poor choice for Teddy (and yes it is very expenvie) can anyone recommend a high quality puppy food that they have used approve of?
I feed my 2 doodles Taste of the Wild....we've given it to them from day one and it's been wonderful. From what I've seen on doodlekisses, many others use it as well. Just my recommendation =) It's an all ages food, so there is no specific puppy blend for it.

here is a list of recommended brands.
We gave Cooper Orijen large breed puppy. As an adult she has a variety of grain free high protein foods including Acana, Go Endurance, Solid Gold, Performatrin (a PetValu brand). My cats have had Orijen, Acana, Now, Go and Taste of the Wild. Im happy with all of them
At nearly 12 weeks my Teddy weighed just 10 pounds, and at 14 weeks he was 16 lbs. He's an F1 standard and he's a small boy still, 56 pounds at 15 months old. I was never worried about him and the vet has never been concerned about his weight either.
Gotta get my two cents in here--I had some puppies on Taste of the Wild and it was a buffalo/venison blend--it was too rich for them and they were pooping around the clock--I put them back on my usual puppy food --Wellness Just for Puppies --and they settled right down in a few days. I have raised 24 puppies from four different litters in the last 14 months and they have done very well on that food. I only fed TOTW because the breeder that I raise the puppies for bought it for them--never again! But, your pup may be fine on it.
As for your vet saying that your pup should weigh 20 pounds, i would love to know what they are basing that one--as others have said, goldendoodles can be all different sizes--and grow at different rates--to tell if he is eating enough, you really can only judge by the boniness, as you said. If you can feel the ribs, the hip bones and the spine, but they are not protruding, he is fine!
BTW, the weight at 16 weeks doubled is roughly what they will weigh as adults. If you know what the parents' weights are, your pup should be somewhere in that vicinity as an adult. So, if his weight at 16 weeks doubled is quite a bit lower than the parents' weight, maybe he is just going to be a smaller GD. It happens!
