Our doodle Bella's best friend the 6 yr old wheaton terrier Sammy had to be put to sleep this week. Our family is heartbroken and we are wondering how we can best express how much we loved Sammy via a sympathy gift to her owner Steve a middle age guy with lots of heartbreak.

I love this idea. Just bookmarked the link for "future" use, not that I ever want to HAVE to use it!!

Hugs to you, Andy. Your loss shows through this post also.  I'm so very sad for you.

You will know what to do.  You already do.  Just be there for them.  There will be good days and bad.  It is a process.

No matter what you decide, whether it is a kind word or something tangible, it is your thoughts, love, and compassion that goes through to help heal their broken hearts.   Your friends will feel it all.

Sorry for your friend's loss Andy.  I truly understand how heart breaking it is to loose a beloved pet.  When I was mourning lost pets, friends and family would send sympathy cards and being by other dogs would always make me feel better.  You have some really great suggestions form the wonderful DK members.  Sorry for your loss.

That is sad.  I'm sorry!  I can't think of any better ideas than you've been given.

When our lab had to be put down one of the sympathy cards we received had a package of "forget me not" flower seeds in it. I thought that was such a sweet gesture.

I second this beautiful idea.  I think sometimes photos/ memory books, while a very loving gesture, are sometimes difficult for the recipient to look at so soon after the loss.  I love the idea of forget me nots, more of a subtle reminder of their beloved pet.

So very sorry! It is a very hard thing o go through! When we lost our beloved Piston, we couldnt stand to be at our house, it was just to quite, sometimes we would go for dinner & just walk around the mall, just so we wouldn't have to be at our quite house! Maybe you can offer to have your friend come to your house to have dinner, but with you having a dog, that may be hard hard for him to be around at this time! Also, when we lost our boy, our vet office gave us a beautiful flower pot with paw prints on it & a couple packs of seeds of Forget Me Nots, we started them in the pot, but we recently made a memorial in our landscaping for him, so they are now planted at his memorial! Ever since this, I try to give Forget Me Nots as well when someone I know looses a pet. Again, I am so very sorry!

Laurie got a few photo blankets from Walmart - I know it's not winter but it is a beautiful thing and he could put it on his couch or bed on those chilly nights.

Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. I like the photo album idea that has been mentioned.  In the past when we lost a dog our friends have donated to the local shelter in our pet's memory. This meant a lot to us as our dogs were always shelter dogs or strays that wandered into our lives. Also, when our dog Her-She passed a friend sent a basket of blooming flowers with bulbs that we replanted outside in our flower bed. Every spring "Her-She's" flowers bloom and they remind us of her beautiful life and our wonderful time together.

Sending thoughts of comfort to your friend Steve today...

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's dog.

You can make a donation to a local shelter or to Wheaten Terrier Rescue in his dog's memory. They will send your friend a card telling him that a donation has been made by you in loving memory of Sammy.

So sorry to hear this... I like the memory book idea.

what about something engraved, like this necklace that Jane got with the image of her boys and the words "unconditional love" on the back.
