We have LIbby trained to only come on the couch when I say "Lovies" and then she gets to snuggle with me.  She cannot go up any other time.  Does she try once in a while, you bet, but we immediately say off and she does.  If I am in another room and ask her if she wants to do "Lovies" she runs to the couch, but does not get up until I sit down.  It didn't take too long for her to learn this:)

awww thats the cutest! i might have to steal the lovies line! lol... yea i agree that i do like to snuggle on the couch...but if he is in his rough housing mood ( he is 11 months so he does have that mood often lol) he cannot fly onto the couch like a psycho lol... he does get off when i say so, but he has crawled up 2 times..and snuggled up and then i let him stay..but he left quick lol.. i think thats best to have them trained to come up when u invite them.. because i do like so snuggle and then if he is never allowed on i have to go on the floor to snuggle lol... how old is Libby? how much does she weigh? has she damaged your couches at all? i worry about his nails..

Libby will be two on the 31st of this month.  She is a medium and weighs between 46 - 48lbs.  Oh yes, she damaged our old (notice I say old, it is gone now) couch and a rocking chair.  She did her teething and chewing on them and I was thinking OMD when is this going to stop. Half the time we did not even see her chewing on the furniture.  Luckily for us they were very old and at the end of her chewing phase we waited another six months and replaced the furniture.   She had lots of toys, we exercised her, she was in training, but it sill happened.  Now she leaves everything alone and sticks to her chew toys, but she does a number on those too.  Most everything we have purchased for her she destroys in minutes.  We had to get Kong or Nylabone toys or bones.  She has very strong teeth and these work great.  Her nails have not damaged our couch, since she is not allowed to run on it and only gets up to snuggle with me.

So what kind of couch did you end up getting? Daphne was never taught to stay off the couch and she jumps up anytime she feels the need(anytime I am sitting there). Her little nails do not damage the leather couch. Lucy is a rehome and while we would allow her on the couch, she does not get up. She will put her paws on me to get hugs but she stays on the floor.

i got a micro suede couch....s o far so good... its only day 2 tho lol

We have a leather couch and both our doodles (one is a mini and one is a standard) jump up anytime they want to.  We don't care.  Nothing has been damaged so far!  I get most of my good snuggles on the couch.

I have an older couch, so Cooper is allowed on there. originally we said no dog on the furniture, but it didnt last long. I have throws over the couch so it doesnt matter. it also protects the couch form cat hair! Cooper prefers the floor most of the time though

Myla is only allowed on the couch when we invite her on!  She will stand in front of us and nudge our hands if she thinks we've forgotton to invite her but she won't come on unless we pat the couch and say "C'mon Myla" - then she jumps on and sits right in between DH and I and snuggles up to each of us to get her cuddles!  Really, she is on the couch every night but we do make her wait until she is invited and she never goes on when we're not there.  Even if we get off the couch and leave her, she gets off and goes to her bed to lay down.

Meg only gets up when she has permission as well.  She behaves on the couch but if someone is here or if I have her at someone else's home I want her to know she doesn't get to be the boss of the couch.  Having said that, so far she gets to come up every time she asks.  Meg's way of asking is to come up and lay her head on the couch and then roll her eyes toward me until I say come up, if that doesn't work she will sit pretty and extend one paw toward me.

Our guys are allowed on our bed only when I "invite" them.  They totally "get" that all furniture is off limits to them unless we tell them it's okay.  The key is never, ever to let them get away with getting up on the furniture without that invitation.  If you see them jump up and don't do anything about it, they'll think it's fine.

Never on the couch or other furniture.  Dogs do not generalize or understand the difference  I think the pretty soon he will invite himself and the next thein for a puppy is to chew.  The floor usually is plenty big.  Besides he has to have clearly defined limits. Either couch or no couch
