Just curious as neither Teidí or Dubh cock their legs when urinating but instead kinda squat like a female dog.

My guy is a year old and just started a half hearted leg lift not too long ago.  He still gets pee on his front paw - LOL .  a male dog we had when I was a child lifted his high up above the midline! I don't think he was neutered though...

Hehe, Charlie does the pee on his paw thing when he occasionally tries a lift. I've been known to reposition him to prevent this...

Both of my guys lift their legs.  It's actually one of their favorite games when we're out....see how many things we can pee on...and it's always a contest between the two of them.

Oscar will be 1 on the 13th, and he still squats. I know its a boy thing, but I really hope he doesn't ever start lifting his leg to pee. We'll see... what will be, will be! Oh, BTW, my DH says Oscar has a 'really cool' squat! LOL... he has this stance that looks very 'manly'...lol.

I've heard two things:

another male has to teach them to lift their leg, and/or

they have to be 'aiming' at something...like the scent of another dog high up on a post...

As I read all these posts Bentley our 9 month old just had a peeing accident....and yes he is squatting....lol

Rooney just turned 3 and has never lifted his leg - Stuart is now 2 and never has either - although they both see other dogs do it at the dog park.  I'm thrilled my boys are "squatters"  LOL!

Sometimes.  Rarely in our yard, but often if we are on a walk and there is something to mark.  He didn't start until 10 months though...and he was already neutered by 5 months.

My Shea never learned to hike his leg. Always squats like his sisters.I love it. He never kills plants or vegges.

Trav (age 3) rarely cocks his leg.  Maybe 8-10 times in his life.  Usually, he stretches waaay out, sort of cocks both hind legs, holds his tail up, and then pees.  Must say, it looks pretty cute.  :)

Clancy does a full lift, Ned began a small leg lift at four (but doesn't pee on things like walls and light posts), and our nine year old Springer still squats.  So....

Bogey started lifting his leg at about six months but only when we're out on a walk - in our yard he squats. My sister told me is is just showing off! What I think is so funny is he lifts his leg on everything when we're walking even when there is no more pee. Guess she's probably right, who would know when looking from afar if he's actually peeing or not!
