Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have finally summoned up the courage to attempt to groom Maxwell myself. After much research through various sites, I decided to purchase the Andis AGC Super 2-Speed Professional Animal Clipper with Locking Blade. Unfortunately, I can't find guide combs to fit the blade. Does anyone use this clipper? If so, where do you find the combs? Do they make longer combs like 1-1/2"?

I will return the clippers if I can't find Combs. Any suggestions for good clippers under $200 for a large goldendoodle with wooly fleece type coat?

Thanks. I actually brought everything to Petsmart and had the groomer show me how to do it. It does fit after all. I'm just stupid and didn't realize that the comb was spring loaded! They really should have instructions.

I have this clipper and most universal comb attachments fit it. The one I got, and the best, I think, is the Wahl Stainless Steel  Attachment Guide Comb set. I got mine through Amazon, with free shipping here:

You've got yourself a great clipper. Definitely keep it!

BTW, the longest metal comb attachment available is 1". Laube makes some extra long plastic comb attachments, their "Mammoth' brand, which run up to 6" in cut length. I've never used them so can't vouch for their performance. You can find them here:

Wahl also makes a plastic #10 comb that is 1-1/4" (I just got mine in the mail today and have yet to try it). I have tried other Laube plastic combs and much, much prefer Wahl metal combs. The Laube plastic combs just didn't give as smooth a cut finish.

Let us know what you think of this new comb please. Probably be a good length for us.

Will do. I'll only be using it on the doods' beards though, as I keep them cut pretty short everywhere else. Also it may be a few weeks before I report back, as I just gave both of them a full groom a couple weeks ago.

Yep. I am really stupid. I was just shown that the comb is spring loaded. Duh. I was afraid to damage the blade so it didn't try to force it. I was just taught the correct way to put the comb on.

Thank you for helping this poor blonde girl. :)

You are not at all stupid! I know I had trouble figuring it out too, as well as how to replace the clipper blade (much harder than attaching combs).

One tip for extending the life of your blades and ensuring they maintain their sharp edges: Use clipper oil before, during, and after using the clipper (while clipper is running, pour a drop or two along the blade's front edge and sides). Blot excess with a paper towel. Only oil the clipper blade, never the attachment combs. Friction is what heats up the blade and causes it to dull. Good and frequent lubrication helps prevent that from occurring.

I was going to post a separate question, but since we are talking...

Would there be any reason to spend the extra money on the 5 speed vs the 2 speed andis? When would that come in handy?

I can't see why you would need five speeds and wouldn't bother paying any extra. I have the two speed and have never thought, oh I'd love more speeds!

Agreed. I'm pretty sure I only use the highest speed on my 2-speed and have never considered needing a higher speed.

I just bought these http://www.amazon.com/Wahl-3390-100-Stainless-Attachment-Profession...

They are metal and they say that they will fit a #10 or #30 blade on most clippers.  I have the Golden A5 clippers and I used a 10 blade and they did great.  I spoke with our groomer first and she said that I would like the metal combs better than the plastic ones.  They came in that nice box and they are marked as to what length hair they leave which is very helpful.

I think you can find them a bit less expensive on amazon as well I just pulled up this one as I think I paid about 32.00 for them a couple weeks ago.  They key I found was brushing out really well so the comb would go through.

My groomer also said watch the utube videos on their site and the other clipper sites as it is very helpful to see them in use.

Yeah, for best clipper results I bathe and blow dry the coat with a high velocity pet dryer, making sure the coat is completely dry before cutting. The metal combs go through the coat like butter. Its really quite satisfying to see that top layer of cut hair fall off over the comb :-)
