Is anyone using Nexgard, oral flea and tick preventative? Opinions anyone?

Our Vet recommended Nexgard for fleas. It's made by the makers of Front.ine, but is a beef flavored pill. Same coverage for fleas and ticks, for 30 days. Wanting to try as the topical presents a problem in the summer with dogs swimming several times a day. Anyone have and insight into this new product?

Have you ever tried Revolution? It protects against fleas, ticks, heartworm, and roundworm (it's labeled for roundworm in Europe but not the US because of the FDA indication approval process and cost according to my vet). It's waterproof after two hours and dries really fast since it's alcohol based (not oily). We picked it over Triflexis because it had a better safety profile and had been on the market longer. We've been using it for about 1.5 years and are extremely happy and have never had a issue.

I'm not really sure why it's not more popular; only a few vets in our area carry it for dogs. My vet says that's because it's a little more expensive and most people in Seattle don't use heartworm protection. Supposedly it only protects against one type of tick--like Nexgard--but Oliver hasn't had a tick since starting Revolution about 1.5 years ago (and we found one tick when he was on Sentinel which doesn't provide tick protection).

It is safer, but according to JD's dermatologist, it doesn't protect against any of the things it's supposed to prevent as effectively as the individual separate products.

Is the main concern with it related to heartworm protection efficacy? I'm just wondering because heartworm isn't prevalent in Seattle (I've heard the only cases come from dogs that have traveled out of the area), so I'm not as concerned about heartworm protection. I would really hate to use Triflexis since its safety profile isn't very good (in my opinion).

I agree with you on the Trifexis. I'm not certain in what ways Revolution isn't as effective as the Heartgard and Frontline I use, but I had asked JD's dermatologist about switching to Revolution and that's what she told me.

That's good to know, thank you. I'll have to do some research online, as my vet recommends Revolution or Triflexis. However, it does seem to be meeting our needs since we haven't found a flea, tick, or roundworm since we started using the product 1.5 years ago. I might have to look into Frontline, but I just love that Revolution isn't oily and dries in minutes.

I have not heard of Nexguard, but our vet recommends Sentinel.  It gives protection against fleas and heart worm (a big concern in our area).  He says that topical tick medications are full of pesticides and really don't offer any more than a 50% guarantee.  He doesn't feel that's enough to risk exposure to the pets and not to mention family members.  Ticks are a major concern as well, but checking your dog regularly and removing them properly seems to be the healthiest option.

We're going to try Nexguard this month. The vet said as soon as a flea bites, it dies. Plus you don't have to wonder if the liquid got down to the skin or washed or rubbed off. It's worth a try. One pill per month.

It looks like the Vectra 3d actually repels fleas and ticks as well as kills them.

This is still a topical, correct? I'm ok with the pill form just killing fleas, not too worried about repelling per se. But that may be important to some so thanks for sharing.

Has anyone used K9 Advantix II?  Our Vet recommends Frontline Plus, but we found that it wasn't working so well this past year.

Revolution only protects against one kind of tick (the brown dog tick) frontline plus protects against three kinds of ticks, the dog tick, lonestar, and deer tick. Since deer tick carries lyme that is the tick you really want the prevention for. I have always used revolution for my cats but I am using frontline plus for Max now.

Does anyone have an update on Nexgard? My vet says it's too new and they want to wait to decide whether or not to recommend it. But I also heard that this may replace Frontline Plus topical.
