Although I've never personally experienced a Poodle bias, and I've encountered plenty of Poodle owners at dog parks (both Lucy and Oscar prefer Poodles over other breeds besides doodles), I think you're right, Leslie. Those people who are biased towards pure Poodles are probably just loyal to their selected breed. I'm kind of biased toward doodles, myself :)
Actually, they should be proud that so many other breeds like to mix with poodles to get their great coats. They don't have the therapy dog personalities, but their coats make them very desirable.
I live in a Chicago suburb and there are easily 10 times as many doodles as poodles here. Perhaps owners feel a bit threatened or jealous of all the doodle popularity?
Our previous dog was a standard poodle and we went "doodle" because we didn't want to replace her but wanted something a bit different. I still love poodles too!
We too are in the Chicago burbs and there are tons of doodles here and people are all cool about it. We also have several standard poodles and many goldens around.
A good friend of mine is a poodle breeder. When I was looking to purchase Charlie ( Labradoodle ), he told me " If you want a dog that is fluffy and non shedding but do not want to purchase a poodle, why not rescue poodles and/or other poodle mix?" So I think much less of a "hate" feeling, but more so of an advocacy feeling towards poodle, I think.
You know how, many of us are not so fond of BYB & Mills, and say rescue or purchase from reputable breeder. I think they may feel like that in their own way. "instead of creating new poo mix, rescue or purchase from the reputable poodle breeder....
This is what I think, I really like standard poodles and Hoka is 75% poodle. But, I do not need a no-shed dog and love the shaggy look. So, I always wonder why people who really need a 100% no-shed dog do not just get a poodle and give it a normal haircut. Then there would be no stress about will he-won't he shed.
I think a lot of people look down on poodles because of the silly haircuts they often get, but they are great dogs.
Amen, Marie.
I'm actually surprised when I see a poodle in a goofy poodle coif these days. Our poodle always just had a simple puppy cut. And, yes, if people are really allergic or need the no-shed dog, the poodle is the sure thing - not a doodle.
I have experienced the same feeling from Golden Retriever owners too, possibly even more than Poodle owners. In my experience the feelings stem from concern over the designer dog fad, and the idea that designer dogs are not being bred by responsible breeders.
While I don't believe in blanket judgements about any breeds (there are plenty of bad pure bred breeders and there are responsible cross breed breeders) I do think that for many, the animosity is coming from a place of legitimate concern for responsible breeding. So as unpleasant as it is to hear that kind of animosity (I have plenty of times) I can definitely understand why they might feel that way. Just a thought.
