Is anyone using Nexgard, oral flea and tick preventative? Opinions anyone?

Our Vet recommended Nexgard for fleas. It's made by the makers of Front.ine, but is a beef flavored pill. Same coverage for fleas and ticks, for 30 days. Wanting to try as the topical presents a problem in the summer with dogs swimming several times a day. Anyone have and insight into this new product?

Our three doodles have been on it for two months without any issues.  Beau and Sully did fine on Trefixis except they hated the taste.  We had to stop with Tank as it made him vomit.  Nexgard they all eat like a treat and no tummy issues.  So far, so good.

Thanks. Good to hear. My Lucca hated Trifexis too. I had to break it into 4 pieces and hide them in 4 pill pockets. Izzy inhaled them but Lucca ate the pocket but not the med..lol.

I just used the Nexguard on May 17 and they both tolerated the pill well, tummy wise. No issues at all. It's too early to say if it works or not, and they haven't been anywhere to really challenge it, like the dog park. Prior to this I have always used Frontline, and the last time ( about 2 months ago) they were at the dog park, Bella came home with 2 live fleas on her. I plucked them off, bathed her, after a long dunk in the pool and vacuumed and waited. Nothing else surfaced. Im not sure if Frontline was supposed to repel fleas, or kill them when they bite, but that was a scare for me. I hate the thought of fleas!!!! So my two are a trial for Nexguard for now, as yes it is rather new. And I'm okay with that. Advances in medicine are made everyday, and I don't feel like I'm risking their lives, so I will give it a try.

Frontline doesn't repel fleas, it just kills them and keeps them from reproducing.

;)

I saw this awhile back and got all excited until I saw it was beef flavored so that leaves Lucy out!  I hate the topicals.

Just got home from a visit to the vet.  I asked about new flea and tick meds and she recommended Nexgard.  She said she has her four dogs on it and her mom put her dogs on it as well.  She assured me it works on all kinds of ticks and I feel good about that because she lives very close to me and we both must be aware of deer ticks.  So after talking to her about it, I am about to change over from Frontline Plus to Nexgard.  Bailey loves Heartguard and thinks it is a treat so now she will be thrilled to get another "treat" instead of having the Frontline put on her back!!

If anyone using Nexgard has any additional feedback it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback Gail. I spoke with my vet and he said it's too new so they haven't promoted it yet but he said he would give me a script for it if I want. I have until the end of this month to get further feedback!!!

I'm curious about this too.  I would much rather have an oral medication than the liquid Frontline.

I just asked about this yesterday, but I'm jumping in on this discussion. My vet says the drug has been around for a long time in Europe, and she feels like their safety testing is better there than here in the US. She is strongly pushing it to families because she feels like whatever anyone tells you, when you apply Frontline to your dog, you apply Frontline to everyone who lives with the dog. If you have kids, this is a safer drug for the whole family. (And I mentioned this in the other discussion, she won't even carry the stronger drugs in her clinic. She feels that they are too dangerous all around. Esp. since we are urban and in our neighborhood if you dog gets bit by a tick it's 95% going to be a dog tick, which still transmits disease, but is easier to spot.)

Thank you Shari, for asking about this and posting. I totally agree with the drug testing in Europe being better, and one of the main attractions to this oral medication is that there is no exposure to others like the Frontline medication. Seems a bit contradictory in our home to be mostly Green, organic and chemical free as possible, and then have this pesticide running all over the house being rubbed into our enviorment and exposing ourselves and young children to it. Not to mention my two dogs are always mouthing eachothers necks and backs, so there is no safe place to put it where they themselves aren't exposed to it orally.
I am willing to give this a try, as the benefits to our whole family outweigh any unknown risks, at this point. Should future studies prove that Nexguard has caused adverse side effects for some, I will reconsider.
We just administered their second months dose and all is well with them.

I was just back at the vet with Bailey and asked about the "European connection" with Nexgard.  My vet said exactly the same thing that yours did. I am glad I switched Bailey to Nexgard from the topical Frontline Plus!

Now...if we could just get a handle on this darn ear infection!!  Worse after a week of meds...today a steroid shot was given as her deep ear canal is severely red.  Poor Bailey does not feel very good. :((
