Petsmart has rawhide on clearance and I was tempted to get some for Ginger, but I remember hearing that rawhide is bad for dogs/puppies.

Why?

Do NOT give your puppy/dog rawhide EVER!  Bad bad bad for them.
The problem with rawhide is that it can cause intestinal blockages.
I give Callie a rawhide every now and then, because I know that she digests them, and I would never let her eat one if I'm not there watching (they can be a choking hazard). Be careful to check that the rawhide was made in the USA though...other countries preserve rawhides in formaldehyde.

Don't do the Petsmart rawhide!  When I do give it, I get the ones from Three Dog Bakery.  They are the gentlest on tummies that I have found and do not use formaldehyde.  I found out the hard way because Kona was very sensitive to the regular ones I got from Petsmart, she would be eating grass like a goat and not a very happy camper.  When I tried the Three Dog Bakery ones, she was just fine.

Type in Rawhide in the seach on the link below:

I must have a doodle with a cast-iron stomach!  Riley loves rawhide and he get them every now and then.  I just make sure not to give him a chew that is too large!  He loves them and they keep him occupied.  He has never had any type of digestion problem either!
Same here!  Shelby loves the bones and I guess we just do things differently at our house...No digestion probs here.
I let Monty have them sometimes, but I buy the pigskin.  They are not as thick skinned, easier for him to chew small pieces off.  My theory is that they are easier to digest?

Ours have rawhide every week - every day when they are puppies. I get the cigar shaped ones and have never had any issues.

I have heard that rawhide is fine, and that it's horrible for your dog. There are great owners here who do feed their pups rawhide, and others who would never. So I'm not sure what the right answer is. However, I fall into the "better safe than sorry" way of thinking so we don't give it to him. Not worth the worry...

I don't even know why they sell Rawhide. I never ever give it to my dogs. It can cause blockage in their stomach... It's not worth it.

We don't let the dogs have them because they gave my dogs diarrhea every time.

Mine love rawhides, and I do get the made in USA brands only. The compressed are safer in regards to the intestinal blockage worry, but one of mine get diarrhea from them. I watch them eat them, they get pretty mushy so I would think they would break down in the gut even more so. I soaked a piece once to see what it did and it became like a lasagna noodle. I just don't see where the blockage issue is such a problem. I'd rather Bella chewed on that than all the other stuff she wants to eat that I KNOW would not dissolve or get soft, like rocks, sticks, socks, shoes, tee shirts, plastic wrappers, bottle caps,,,,ANYTHING she can get to before me.
