Connie,  I agree.  The fleas, and the mosquitoes are so bad here in Florida.  I don't like the idea of the heart worm preventative, but don't like the idea of not having them safe either.  I don't know how my neighbor does it with no heart worm preventative.  I have my guys on Interceptor, and I still get uneasy seeing a mosquito in the house.  Ha, ha.

OK, the guy from Forever Lawn is coming out to give me a quote tomorrow.  It's really expensive, ~$10/sq ft.  My grassy area is very small, so I might be able to do the front yard.  He said it has an 8 year warranty too.  My BF is not in favor of it tho as he is very frugal (thank goodness one of us is!).

I read that a lot of herbs work to deter fleas because of their oils.  I have a lemongrass plant in my yard...maybe I will train Kramer to lay on it.  The herbal dip you mentioned is made of of a variety of essential oils so it probably works great - I'm going to purchase some.

I'm willing to try any natural remedy but still not ready to give up the Certifect or heartwork preventative either.  The fleas in Florida can get out of control too quickly.  Thanks for the info...as always, these are interesting and helpful discussions for us doodle parents!

Connie, Please keep me posted on the Forever Lawn also.  I am interested in that as well.

Connie, Yes, my new Vet mentioned that Comfortis can cause seizures.  My old Vet never, ever mentioned that.  I found a couple of other products on The Natural Pets website that I thought looked interesting.  One was a natural topical called Sentry Natural Defense (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Sentry-Natural-Defense-Flea-...), the other is Halo Herbal dip (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Halo-Herbal-Dip-for-Dogs/115...).  Looks like the Halo can be used many different ways.  You can use it as a spray just like the Neem Protect.  I like what you ordered as well.  I looked up the ingredients in the Flea Free and this is what I found:

Garlic
Vinegar
Fennel
Nettle
Neem
Lemongrass
Hyssop
Ginger

I recognize at least four of the ingredients mentioned.  Garlic, Vinegar, Neem, and Nettle.  The first three were some of the ones the Holistic Vet mentioned for prevention, and the Nettle she mentioned for flea allergies to alleviate itching and skin irritations.  I am sending out an email to my Vet to see what feed back I get.  Thanks for sharing what you ordered.

Flea Free Food Supplement ~ Natural non-toxic flea, tick, mite control for pets!

I just order the food grade DE, a shampoo, and a supplement that are all supposed to help with the prevention and treatment of fleas.  I'm definitely not stopping the Certifect for now but will see if Kramer gets any new bites.  From what I've read, essential oils can help deter the fleas from jumping on the dog.  This would be my ideal scenario.  I think it's a matter of controlling things.  I'm also looking at the artificial turf since we have such a small area of grass.  It's called Forever Lawn and the SPCA here locally said they love it, so I was impressed with that testimonial.

A friend told me that Comfortis can cause seizures in a dog.  Any of these flea treatments seems so toxic...I'm going to keep trying the natural routes to see if we can at least minimize the damage around here.

Amy, OK.  It went through.  I have more information, but can not seem to locate the paper work in my messy office.  I will send it out to you as soon as I find it.  My neighbor is brave to go with no heartworm treatment, but she has had ten dogs in her life time all different breeds, and she says that none have every had heart worm treatment, and none have every had heart worms.  One block over, we have a friend that their dog had heartworms.  He was on heartworm treatment.  My dogs are currently on a heart worm prevenative.

Amy, Cubbie & Ollie,
Hello.  Cubbie and Ollie are adorable!  I don't think the Neem Protect Spray smells bad.  I think it smells like Lemon pledge.  It is strong at first, but goes away quickly, and leaves a light Lemon Pledge like smell. I spray it on both, and then brush forward and backward.  Yes, the combination of the two has worked great for us.  I also use a natural spray in my house as well, just as an extra precaution.  I am not currently doing the DE outside, and I can tell. I am thinking of adding the DE food grade to their food..
I also use DERMagic Lemon Grass Spearmint, Skin Rescue Shampoo Bar (with Sulfur & Neem Oil) (http://www.dermagic.com/), when I bath them.  I don't bath them often either.  I would say twice a year.  I like the bar shampoo, because one dog has a coarse coat, and he ends up very soft.  My other dog has a fleece coat, and the DERMagic seems to weight his coat down.
When we used the topical, they only worked for two weeks.  I ended up putting them both on Comfortis, on the recommendation of the Vet.  The Comfortis worked, but it had an awful smell to it, and the dogs put off the same smell.  I could not give them the entire pill at one time, they would throw it up.  I decided after that to switch Veterinarian’s. I loved the Vet, but each time they would throw up the Comfortis, he would tell me to give it to them again.  It was a battle getting them to take the pill, it smelled awful, and they hated it, and I hated giving it to them.  Our current Vet has a Holistic Vet we can see, and a pet nutritionist.  I have seen all of them now.  The Holistic gave me options as to natural flea treatments.  I have not looked into all of them.  I do remember one was oregano oil, and she really recommended that.  She gives it to her dogs, and swears by it.  I route that I could see more research on.
My neighbor uses the same Veterinary as I do, and she uses DE on her lawn, and uses the DERMagic Shampoo Bar, and she has a dog that is nine years old, and he has never had a  flea treatment or heart worm preventative. She bathes her dog every week with the shampoo bar and swears by it.

Amy, I am trying to post a long message to you, but it keeps throwing it out.  I will keep trying.
