This is my homeopathic vet's view as well. We are supposed to be smart enough to feed our kids, but not smart enough to feed our dogs. I really felt I had been brainwashed until my vet woke me up. Since then I have been a diehard raw food feeder. I have raised over 160 puppies on raw food. It is amazing to watch those little guys chomp down a piece of chicken at 5 weeks old. They so enjoy it.

Hi all, here is an interesting article I found http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1244595/Is-food-youre-feedi...

Thank you for your thoughts. That is really good to hear Barb that you as a breeder encourage all of your new owners to feed raw & you give them an extended health warranty for doing so. I love reading the grooming tips as well & think the ones that cut their doodles coats are very brave. I know practice makes perfect but I am not game to do it.

Ricki I feel really sad when I think of my beautiful german shepard boy I had years ago, I fed him sloppy tin food that went in one way & come out the same way & never knew why!!!!!!!!!!! but he lived for 12 years. Like you I have learnt a lot with each new dog I have got & will continue to learn from all the wonderful people here on Doodle Kisses & the internet.

Hi Liana. I am not very active in this group but I do raise my ALDs in as natural way as possible. I encourage my new owners to feed raw and minimize vaccinations. I even give extra health warranty if they follow that regime and do titers instead of vaccinations. We all do better as we learn. I have a homeopathic vet that has taught me so much. I share what she has taught me with other breeders and many have been swayed I am happy to say. I would be more active in this group, but my main group Doodle Grooming keeps me pretty busy. I see you are a member there too. That's great.

Hi Liana! I'm so glad you joined the group! Jindi is beautiful! I feel the same way you do when I look back at how ignorant I was with my previous dogs and how I could have cared for them better. Yet at the time I believed I was doing the best for them. Having the internet available now has really helped to give us all access to the info we need to make more informed choices about their care. Hopefully we can now offer our doodles healthier and longer lives!

Hi everyone, I am so glad I found this group. I am glad as well that there are others that want to treat their animals naturally. I try to give Jindi all things that are natural. My last mixed breed boy had to be put down because of throat cancer, he was 11 1/2 but I still think to this day the yearly vaccines, dry kibble, flea & tick, heartworm prevention & whatever other poison I used on him contributed to him getting the cancer. I thought I was doing the best thing for my boy.

Hi Jennifer nice to meet you too! We don't do much more specifically for Tara because we try to live a chemical free lifestyle as a household so everyone benefits! :) We don't use chemicals such as fertilizer, weed control products or pesticides on our property (inside or outside). Inside we don't use any chemically scented items such as air fresheners or candles. We use unscented /fragrance free products for our laundry which includes Tara's bedding. We also wash her in organic/and or fragrance free shampoos and rinses. Even when she was going to a groomer we asked her to use our products on Tara. I homecook for her so she gets free range or organic meat with organic veggies and yogurt, eggs, cheese, etc.  She is mostly grain free but does have rice occasionally which is organic. I am working toward organic treats which I  have yet to find commercially so I will have to make them myself too. I'm still working up to THAT!!

I think it is a good plan to have Jack heartworm tested every six months considering where you live. When Tara first started taking HWF it caused her to have a little diarrhea when I used it according to their directions. Not bad diarrhea but I could tell it was irritating her tummy. I contacted the company and they worked out a plan to give her less product but take it more frequently which has worked fine. So if you have problems of that sort be sure to contact the company so they can help work out a plan for you too.

Thank you so much!!! I am going to order both products tomorrow.. I am too tired tonight. I live in South Carolina, the fleas are pretty bad here.  I am going to slowly transisition him over to these products.. I just can't stand the thought of keeping him on all this junk. I think for a while I am going to ask his vet to do a heart worm test every six months instead of yearly, this way if the medicine is not working, I can treat him quickly.

Thanks for your help. I would love to know what else you do for your dogs naturally. I have Jack on Braggs apple cider vinegar which is good for his PH, digestion and supposedly to keep fleas off.

Hi Jacksmom! Jack is so  tiny and adorable!! I share all of your concerns about using chemcials on my doodle girl. . She has never had any flea/tick chems or chemical heartworm preventative.  She is two years old now and we have not had a flea problem and she is heartworm negative.  I think that it is important to consider all aspects of the equation though. Some areas of the country are much more prone to these type of pests than others. Our area has fairly low number of heartworm problems compared to the more southern areas. I am not familiar with southern flea issues but suspect they too would be a greater problem.

Here is what we do: We use nothing for fleas/ticks but would treat her with diatomaceous earth if we found any fleas on her.  Our household is very flea unfriendly and the likelihood of an infestation is low. All of our furniture, throw pillows, etc. are washable with the exception of the interior of the couch. It does have a washable cover. We have hardwood floors throughout. Also our mattresses/springs are covered with dust mite covers that would keep out fleas. So they would have a tough time getting a stronghold here. Basically we are willing to take on the fleas rather than  constantly subject her to the chemicals.

This is what we use for heartworms:

It is used as a treatment for the condition and as a preventative. She has done well on this so far and the company has great customer service and is very helpful if any questions come up.
