Heather and Tracy

I am in the process of switching my dogs to raw but i am not using a commercial product. I am just feeding meat and bones along with yogurt.... This group has really helped. I fed raw many years ago, but had a very hard time with the idea of my dogs eating the bones - they were gulpers and I got really scared when my pug swallowed a chicken wing whole - so I ground everything. This time I am going to let them chew the bones and it is going really well, for both me and the dogs!

Heather,
I just joined as well my dogs are currently on Honest Kitchen Zeal and Embark. I will be switching to raw as well. My dogs love Honest Kitchen and I have been very happy with the results. I was thinking of continuing it along with the raw.

So we are completely new to this, and not even fully raw eaters yet.  Today is day 3 of a cold turkey switch to the Honest Kitchen Embark (a freeze dried complete raw food) and so far so good!  For the first time in Jake's 10 short months of life he has solid stools after trying many different kibbles.  This has really encouraged me and in a bit more time I want to start feeding him more raw ingredients.  Does anyone in this group use the Honest Kitchen as a base with extra raw meats added in??

I too live in SC, although I do not feed solely raw diet to Jack I do use some products. I use the Natural Instinct Raw food and they have a great Bone with marrow in it. I do believe that they may ship if you google their website. I know what you mean about the teeth thing. I give Jack a marrow bone one or two times a week but I am still brushing in between,

I was wondering if anyone has found an online provider for raw recreational bones that are somewhat a little more sanitary than just buying raw from the meat counter at the grocery store.  I was buying Primal Raw at a pet store near my home, but this vendor has had a difficult time getting the bones in stock.  I buy Canz Country Pet Raw and I feed the Honest Kitchen dehydrated for the carbs.  I can tell my doodles are missing the bones, though.  Their teeth have required much more maintenance than they did when I was giving them Primal recreational bones several times per week.

I love both the Canz Country Pet and The Honest Kitchen because I can ship to my door.  I would love to find an online provider for the recreational bones.  Any thoughts?

Hi Napathedoodle! I remember when you first got Napa. We used to belong to the same Labradoodle forum. Back to your question - we live in CT and have a terrific vet who also feeds raw and has a whole medicine approach. She uses holistic methods whenever possible. RI is a small state so Manchester, CT can't be too far away. Let me know if you would like her name and phone number.

Hi Everyone!

I've been feeding Napa raw for almost two years now, have done most commercial raw diets, and have finally settled on making my own. I'm following a recipe from http://www.switchingtoraw.com/ but tweaking it to make it work for my family. We feed Napa a turkey bone at night, and a mixture of about equal parts veggies and raw meat (meat and organ meat) for breakfast. I'm also supplementing with Call of the Wild from Wysong, which is a powder mix that gives a balance to the meal (that I might not be giving him).

I think what I'm doing is fine, but I've moved from CA to RI, and have lost my pro-raw diet holistic vet. So, I have a few questions... first off, do you all go to a vet who is tolerant of your preferred diet? If you don't, how do you handle the "dry dog food is best" speech? Secondly, Do any of you know of any vets in RI, or near by MA that's tolerant of raw, even pro? There's only two holistic vets here, but both are expensive (I'm a lowly graduate student on a very fixed income) and both seem to be how should I put this, very holistic? I was in love with my holistic vet in CA because she was the perfect blend of holistic and conventional. And I'd love to find one here with the same qualities....

Is there any where that I could perhaps get some help with this??

Thanks for any help you can give!

Sam, I have also joined the Yahoo! Raw Feeding group ~ they are extremely serious, very knowledgeable, and have some excellent information on raw feeding. I think every raw feeder needs to take a look at it.

I believe you are correct about the kibble, so you might consider eliminating in completely from their diet, as it's just acting as a filler ~ and not a good one.

As for the rice and pasta ~ rice and boiled chicken is the first thing you give [to a dog] with an upset stomach, but can't imagine why you would give pasta, particularly as you want to strive for a grain-free diet. With a proper diet ~and given each dog being different~ I don't think a dog should need a "digestive aid".

We are off today to find a "real" butcher ~ our local grocery store meat counter has been very dissapointing.

I have been here since I was 5 years old ~ the accent is completely gone!

Vicky - This is the first I have heard about not mixing the kibble and raw. We have never owned dogs before so we are simply following the guidelines from the breeder (doing as Im told....lol...) Are you saying that they shouldn't need the kibble as well or that they shouldn't have both together?? I always thought the rice/pasta was a digestive aid type thing!!!!!
Pet meat is the mince that butchers sell that is not for human consumption - I think its basically the junk they would normally throw away!!!! Different butchers seem to have different types but I've found a pet place here that sells different types (ie chicken, kennel, low fat mince) that they like.
How long have you lived over there?

I just have to ask, Sam ~ what is "pet meat"?

I am a new raw feeder, but I understood you shouldn't mix kibble with raw, in fact, dogs don't even need the kibble, and you should try to get it out of their systems once you begin raw.

I also understood rice and pasta gave them nothing in the way of nutrients or vitamins.

This raw isn't as simple as you would think, is it? (lol)

P.S. I was born in Brisbane, but now live in CA.
