LOL you should see the looks we get when I take them for a walk!

Andrea I have joined the yahoo group and have just actually printed off the Dietary Recommendations for Dogs. Like I told the group, I'm nervous ..as soon as I feel I have all the info. I need I'm going to start.

I'm just checking now on how to do the switch.

Thank you SO much Trudy! I have asked to join the yahoo group I'm just waiting for them to accept me. I do go to the farmers market and have a butcher that we buy from. I will be using him. I guess I just didn't know what to ask for. I really appreciate the detailed message :)

Shirley, I looked at their site, and although I think any raw food is preferable to kibble, I do have some problems with their plan.  Before I go on, let me say upfront that I'm a proponent of the Raw Meaty Bones diet -- which you can pretty much get at your local grocery store.

My first issue in their suggested diet plan is the feeding of chicken and duck necks and pig tails -- these are too small for your doodle, and way too full of bone with too little accompanying meat.  Your dog's diet should be a lot of meat and a little bone.  It's actual chunks of meat that help most to keep your dog's teeth and gums healthy and give him/her the satisfaction of gnawing, which is how carnivores eat.  Ground food will not provide these benefits, plus the dog will gulp it down too quickly -- not healthy for digestion.

Second, I would never give any kind of beef bones, even neck, to a dog -- they are too dense and can cause broken teeth.

Unless you are living in a remote area, I think you can more cheaply source your dogs' food from a grocery -- the same meat you are already buying, such as whole chickens and other poultry, pork roasts and ribs, beef shanks with marrow (without the bone), beef liver and heart, raw eggs, etc.

You can find out more about Raw Meaty Bones on their Yahoo discussion group at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RawMeatyBones/ .  It's a helpful group, as Denise, below, can tell you.

Good luck with the transition!

Hello everyone :) I will be feeding my two dogs raw. Could I please have you look at the web site totallyrawdogfood.com and let me know what you think? A friend of a friend has been using them for 3 years now and has had no problems.

Lillie my doodle 65lbs. and my maltese is 9 lbs. I will be switching them both over from dehydrated.

Thanks! Shirley

Andrea,

You are so helpful.  You and Trudy and the gang at yahoo are my new RFF (raw food friends)!! Let's all get together for coffee and tripe!

Thank you, Andrea - about the eggs.  I actually did offer an egg to Murphy today, once he finished flying his white flag - and I cracked it in my hand and he lapped it up.  It was a great moment of fun actually.  He ate the entire thing, shell and all and then licked my palm. This is actually fun - this raw world!!
