I thank you all for responding to me n giving me advice...I will try the eggs but I don't think it would have worked anyway...she wouldn't eat anything and she was throwing up too and as far as the wet dog food <thank you> she already has wet dog food, shes not to fond of dry dog food so i add a little wet on top and put her bromide on that because i know <usually> she will eat that right away. This morning i put some wet dog food on a plate and put her medicine on it and she wouldn't touch it, so i had to hold her mouth open n put it in her mouth n shut her mouth till she swallowed it...she was not happy about it but i didn't want a replay of last night. I love her so much and was so hard for me to see her this way. I have been laying around with her all day and shes just pretty much been sleeping, shes still weak n kinda walking into things. I have to run to the grocery store and i hate to leave her....i wish my lab could use the phone n call me if anything happened lol Thank you everyone, i will keep you posted how she is doing~
I don't know if this is helpful, but when JD absolutely must eat for medical reasons, I scramble an egg for him; it's fast, light, and very easily digested.
Gayle, please don't beat yourself up! Things will happen when a dog needs meds every day, especially when it's more than once a day--life will occasionally get in the way. We're all just doing the best we can. It may not even have been missing the dose that caused the seizure... it could have been the stress of being sick or any number of things. Many of these seizure-prone dogs will never be totally seizure-free. It's hard to accept but it does make life easier when you realize that it will probably happen here and there, even when you are making your best effort to prevent it. Getting food into her may not have helped if she was vomiting anyway, but I do keep a few cans of Quinn's favorite wet food on hand for when he needs to have food with medication. He's picky about dry food so when I know he needs to eat right away, it's easier for me to just give him something he really likes. I really hope you'll start to feel better today and give yourself a break!
Gayle, I'm so sorry. Please don't feel it's your fault. You are doing your best to give her a loving home. I hope some of the others will have some advice on how to give meds when the dog isn't eating. Hugs to you and Sophee.
Last night was so hard....yesterday afternoon Sophee started acting like she didn't feel good, she didn't want to eat or anything, i knew something was wrong. My lab had been sick the day before so i thought maybe it was like the doggie flu or something. I tried to hand feed her even and nothing...well thepotassium bromide she takes says only give with food and from what i understood it was very important to make sure she had the Phenobarbital, well i manged to get that down at 5;30 and about 9 that night she threw up, i did not manage to get the bromide dwn and was praying one dose her missing would be ok <tears> it wasn't...she had a seizure last night...i feel so bad, it killed me to watch her like that. I sat in the floor holding her, telling her it was going to be ok and bawling my eyes out...this is so hard to take...) ; I feel so bad like it was my fault...maybe i should have just forced the medicine dwn with no food? I dunno...i am new at this and i am not sure i am good at it...i laid by her talking to her n rubbing her for the rest of the night and crying...i fell asleep crying and woke up crying ) ;
My Sophee is on phenobarb and potassium bromide, she is doing great on that.
@Mary -
Have you considered potassium bromide? We have been very successful with it. Talk to the vet.
Hi everyone,
My Antoinia has had seizures since age 7 months. She is a teagen park florida mini doodle. She has been on every seizure med there is.......now on phenobarb and zonisimide for the past year. She still has seizures on these medications but they were short and not bad. Lately she has had longer and stronger seizures and my vet wants me to up her zonisamide and she is already on a high dose. Wondering if anyone out there has a dog like mine who has exhausted just about all the meds there is, and what you are doing to help your dog. I tried acupuncture, but she still has them. She was to a specialist in NJ (neurologist) and had an MRI. They told me the MRI was good, not tumor, she has idiopathic seizures. We use rescue valium so I can't use that for a daily medication. I was thinking about some herbs.
thanks in advance.
Mary and Antonia
