Hi all..i am new to this group and will be a new mommy to a goldendoodle this week! She is 3 years old and she has seziures..i know she has been to a doggy neuroligists and had lots of tests run, and she is now on phenobarbital twice a day and potassium bromide and she is doing good hasn't had a sezuire in a month. I guess my question is...can you give me any kind of advice as to what to do if she does have one...i am new to this and have no idea...thx Gayle ( ;
Bob,
I was worried about starting Dooley on phenobarb because of the sedative effect on him, but it never really happened. Our vet did not start him with a loading dose, but a small dose based on his weight. We had a level checked after about 2 months and it was on the low normal side.
As Andy and Sharon commented below it may be the initial effect of the drug. But I am also curious as to Petie's dose and how long Petie has been on the med. Not sure how long you have been with your vet, but if they continue to be unresponsive, maybe it's time to find someone else.
Keep us posted, we hope Petie is himself again soon.
Bob -
I think what you are seeing is the sedating effect of the phenobarb. Two things are coming into play here 1)They probably gave him a "loading" dose - that is a very large dose to get the blood levels up quickly and 2) There is an adjustment period for the medication.
Bob, this is a great place to rant and vent among non-judgmental friends. Be sure and read through the discussions here in this group, and maybe your wife would feel better too if she reads what others have experienced and sees that many dogs who have seizure disorders and are on medications are doing well and having a good quality of life.
