QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups. Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.
I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!
Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

I have a 12 week old ALD "grand dog" that visits frequently. Oliver is 8 and tolerates the puppy play fine with no issues at all. Ivy on the other hand was a bit stand offish (as she is with all…Continue

Lucy did GREAT with the trainer! She was really impressed with how much Lucy already knew. She taught me how to work better with her on the lead and teaching off. We have a long way to go but I think we are off to a great start! Lucy also had her first doodle play date yesterday. The trainer told how to introduce the pups and bc Lucy is really shy with new dogs. Here is a pic!
Guinness doesn't have any of Murphy's reactiveness with other dogs. His tail will wag and he'll definitely look at dogs that we meet, but he doesn't "fixate" the way his brother does. Guinness doesn't lunge or bark at other dogs ever. He does want to stop and meet them, but if I just keep walking I can always maintain a "loose leash" with him.
What a good idea, Jane. Does Guinness have any of these problems at all? Ned and Clancy are fine with most dogs, but not all. I need to see if I can see a difference in the ones they don't like. When our alpha dog became ill and after he died, Ned took on the protector role and now barks or growls more at others.
Nancy, the dogs that set Murphy off are the ones that are acting "unstable". For example, there were quite a few dogs who were walking well in front of their "master" (and pulling) on the walking trail. There were others that started barking and pulling the minute they saw us approaching. We saw lots of dogs, and most of them were not being controlled. Then we came to a man walking a LABRADOODLE. This dog was calmly loose lead walking with his owner. There was absolutely NO reaction from Murphy as we walked past and even spoke briefly to the owner. By the way, this Doodle was absolutely beautiful. I know that whole "unstable energy" label is a "Dog Whisperer thing", but it just happened to be very true with Murphy. The trainer was pointing out things about the other dogs' body language and just the way they were walking with their owners that were great predictors of how Murph was going to respond. What happened was that BOTH dogs took on this "crazyness" as they passed each other.... apparently it's contageous, and we have to "proof" Murphy to this. I am going to "plant" myself outside of Petco several times over the next couple of weeks. As I see other dogs approaching, I'll put Murph in a sit/stay. I will bring high value treats, and when he sits calmly as other dogs pass by, he'll get a "reward". If not, he will get a collar correction. This is really not a "training exercise"....it's more about desensitization and him learning that even when dogs in this "worked up state of mind" pass by, he needs to stay calm and not react. We'll see. The trainer describes it as exposing him to a "conveyor belt" of unstable dogs so he learns ignoring them is a good thing and reacting isn't.
Becca that's so great you have a great trainer. It sounds like you are off to a fantastic start. I often tell my trainer her real work is training me! She makes everything look so easy but I'm determined to be a good student ;-)
Jane, is there a type of dog or something that helps the trainer - and you, know which dogs set Murphy off?
Jane, sounds like you have an awesome trainer! I wonder how he can tell which dogs will set him off or not?! Amazing skill!
Becca and Lucy....sounds like an awesome first training session! Have fun with the Doodle pup tomorrow!
I loved our trainer! She is so great! Dixie our breeder suggested her and she was well worth the wait. She thought Lucy was amazing! :) She said she was a confident puppy and everything she is nervous at is totally normal. The thing I am working most on right now is walking on a lead and NO jumping. She is a MANIAC when someone new comes over. I am keeping a lead draging on her at most times. That way I can jump on the lead stop it pretty quickly. I took her on a walk today and she was SO scared of all the dogs barking. I thought an early Sunday stroll would be quiet! There where more dogs then ever yapping away.
We have our first puppy playdate with a baby goldendoodle tomorrow :) She gave me some tips to help the meeting go well. Oh the jumping. This will be our biggest challange. My 2 kiddos look like the best chew toys ever :) Especially when they giggle and run! (sigh)
Jane it sounds like slow but steady improvement! I think you guys are doing great!!
