INVASION - THE BIRDS

When I took Haley out for the third time this morning to poo (first two times were failures) we had been invaded by a huge flock of seagulls. They were in three of the fields surrounding my property. As Haley and I moved around the yard the seagulls took to the air moving away from us but flying over head to do so.…

PET TRAVEL TIPS

Well December is finally here, so you know what that means…

…some of us must prepare to travel for the Christmas Holiday! Weekends, evenings and in-between commercials we are down in our storage rooms, cellars, and attics, digging for garment bags, and those suitcases on wheels with the pop up handles.

Whether you and your pet have traveled extensively or if this is your maiden voyage together, there are many, many ways to make your journey, both safe, and memorable (in a good…

What Doesn't Kill Super Truffle Makes Him Stronger

Remember how I said that Katy Perry named “Roar” after me?  Well, it turns out Kelly Clarkson wrote “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” for me.  It's my new anthem.

Where to begin?  Shall I start with my traumatic experience at the groomer just days before Thanksgiving, when the human torturer giddily tried to pluck the hair from my ear? Or the emergency visit to the vet…

If you have not read the other blog, these are Lyric's three week old pups, which happens to be the best age to pose the pups in a collection of hats that i have from a Teddy Bear collection....so, here are the boys with and without their hats--they were all VERY sleepy having just had a long lunch with momma!

A big boy I call Burly!…

Three week old puppies--and they are in hats!

Yes, it is that time again--when I raise Lyric's pups and they reach the tender age of three weeks old, the hats that I have fit them perfectly. These hats are part of the costumes from a collection of bears that I own (Muffy Vanderbear) and boy, do they look cute on the pups! These pups were all pretty sleepy since they just had a long visit with mom--but that makes it even sweeter in my opinion!

These are the girls--and then the blog program makes me stop adding pics--must be a…

BED BUGS

I have bed bugs! Not the tiny microscopic kind with a gazillion little legs. I’m talking about the hairy four legged kind with the extra long bushy tail that swishes past my face at night.

We are losing the bed battle!

Timely Repost of a Blog/ Wanted: Perfect Doodle!

We have had a couple of discussions lately about our Doodles and if we are educated enough when we bring one into our family.  Christmas is also right around the corner and many people have that new puppy on their Holiday list. I thought this would be a timely re-post.

Protective Mother

Patsy is a Llassa Apso - Poodle cross who is extremely protective of her one puppy, Patrick.  Patsy started to nail any dog that ventured near Patrick's puppy pen.  She even nipped Holly to the point where Holly growled (an unusual occurrence from Holly). Patsy lost three of her four puppies because of neglect in a California shelter.  Three puppies were somehow drowned in an open drain. So we can't really get down on Patsy but, we cannot have her nailing the dogs who are curious about…

Fudge and the Company!

Every Thanksgiving my aunt and uncle come for the Thanksgiving holiday.  My dogs are always happy to see them, except if my uncle has his hat on and then Vern barks at him like he has never seen him before. Sometimes I think Vern needs eyeglasses or at the very least, an IQ test.  My uncle could be in the middle of petting Vern and if…

A BIRTHDAY THANK YOU NOTE

I thought it was important that we shared a birthday thank you note with each of you. You all made Harley feel so special posting birthday wishes during his Thanksgiving “Birthday” Holiday Celebration (Whew, that’s a mouth full)…

thank you-1

I can honestly say, with the brief exception from “Tom the Turkey” all eyes were on Harley this weekend. He is still glowing and…

Drop it!

Yarrow is just shy of 12 weeks now.  She'll be three months on December 10th.  My hands are so sore from all the mouthing and yesterday she broke the skin and left a bloody little gash on the back of my left hand.  I was putting her leash on.  There was no intention or effort on her part, just an open mouth and razor sharp shark teeth.  Anyway that's not news.  Here's what's new.

I've just joined the group Training - Experiences and Mindsets.  In the discussion, Lucy and Annabelle's…

Week One in Review

It's been nine days since Charlie arrived.  He's very calm for a puppy his age (most of the time).  He sleeps a lot.  He's had seven accidents in the house since we got him.  Started the bell training today.  I didn't think the bell was going to be necessary before, but I was wrong.  He's doing great with "sit" and "down".  I began clicker training today and used it outside last time he went potty.

He still has challenges in these areas:

1.  Digging - We are…

Gavin's New Pal Raven

Meet Raven, an 11 month old Great Dane.  She was Gavin's playmate today.  This gorgeous girl made Gavin look like a small guy in spite of the fact that he is 29in at the shoulder.  After a good romp, we took the two for a nice walk.  Looks like she may be coming back for more tomorrow :)…

Of Mountiains and Cheese

The Bernese Mountain dog was originally bred to pull the carts of the dairy farmers in the Swiss mountain towns and villages.  Yarrow's mother is a Berner, as they are nicknamed.  I can tell that the drive to pull is quite strong in Yarrow.

Here in the mountain town of Kimberley, B.C., it's not possible for me to go anywhere without having to go uphill one way or the other.  That includes a simple trip to check the mailbox at the front of the house.  I instruct any deliveries to the…

My 9th Birthday by Jackdoodle

Hi, my friends, JD here. My birthday fell on Thanksgiving this year! I turned 9 years old yesterday, so we had a double celebration at my house. My human brother and his friend spent the day here, and they played ball with me a lot !!! I have a bunch of new balls that my Aunt Jane sent me for my birthday, and we played with all of them! Even the Happy Birthday tennis balls that are only supposed to be for outside! I had a really good time!

My mom got me a new antler for my…

The magic of the web and Social media

I wanted to share a couple of experiences that really demonstrates the magic of the web and social media. Six years ago we lost our old Jack to cancer. My husband was crushed and wanted a dog that looked exactly like Jack. I searched Petfinder and found our Moose. He was in a shelter in South Carolina. DH and I drove overnight 600 miles to pick him up. The shelter was outdoors in a very poor area. The shelter was so impressed that we came so far that we were featured in their local paper. Fast… Continue

...and two steps back.

Yesterday was a busy day.  After having a decent night's sleep, the weather was a bit warmer and I took Yarrow and Sadhu to walk around town.  We were gone much longer than planned, stopping and chatting with others walking their dogs.  Yarrow is quite timid around strange, large dogs.  She sits behind me with her head between my legs, as if my legs are fence boards she can safely watch from behind.  It's good for her to just sit there and experience the calm exchange of conversation after…
