Holly's summer so far

Holly has had such a great summer so far! We have officially made it a month with no diarrhea!! I'm so excited about this. Our new vet did blood testing and everything came back normal. He decided she either has food allergies or just a very sensitive stomach. We've had her on a digestive supplement all month which seems to be helping a ton. Now we're weaning her off to see if she can stay free of diarrhea without the enzyme. If not we may have to keep her on it long term. She still has mildly… Continue

Oh Allergies, what did my Holly do to deserve you?

As of a few days ago poor Holly has been sneezing constantly! Her nose is always running and she's itching more than ever. I'm looking in to starting benadryl or another allergy medicine to help her feel better. I'm starting to think it is the grass or something else outside, because it's so much worse when we take her out to go potty or after we've let her hang out on the deck for a while. Last night we gave her a cool bath and that seemed to help the sneezing for about an hour, then she… Continue

Holly at work

I'm a speech pathologist at two nursing homes, both which have fairly lenient pet policies. I always share stories about Holly with my patients and I've brought in pictures to show everyone how cute she is. Friday afternoon I found out two of my patients were going on Hospice

and weren't doing to well. I talked with the DON and got permission to bring Holly in to visit them. It was SOOO great! We ended up visiting with 7-8 of the residents, and Holly did very well. She didn't jump or bark.… Continue

Thanks for the Advice!

I just wanted to thank everyone here on DK for the wonderful advice and support regarding Holly's possible allergies. I can't express how grateful I am to have all of your knowledge and experience to help us get through this. We have changed Holly to a new food for now, California Naturals. We are going to try it for a couple of months and see how she does. We're also continuing with the EPO to help with her dry skin.

I contacted her Breeder and neither of Holly's parents have… Continue

Update on Sick Holly

Ok, I feel VERY overwhelmed. We took Holly to the vet and he is convinced it is food allergies. He gave her a shot to stop her from vomiting, an antibiotic, a

steroid, and cream for a yeast infection in one of her ears.

I think he may be right, she does have frequent dry skin, she chews her paws, and she's been pulling fur out of her tail. He also suspected allergies since she's been getting sick so frequently in a short period of time.

My main concern is that he's a big… Continue

Sick again!

Holly is sick again :(. I feel like this is becoming a regular thing, and I wish we knew what the cause was. She has had bad bouts of diarrhea and/or vomiting in January, March, and now May. The last two times they did not find anything and said she had probably eaten something to upset her stomach.

This time, it started last night with diarrhea so we skipped dinner. We let her out in the morning and her stools were slightly more formed and a darker color, so I thought we were on the… Continue

It's Me or the Dog

Ok, so this morning I watched an episode of It's Me or the Dog on Animal Planet which featured a woman in Long Beach and her Labradoodle "Jack." The woman used absolutely no discipline and she let her dog run rampant and walk all over her. In one clip the dog jumped out of a sailboat in the ocean and swam back to shore with her trying to chase it, and in another clip it ran out the front door and right in front of a passing car! It is so frustrating to watch shows like this because these dogs… Continue

Adolescence is here!

Holly is 8 1/2 months, and I think we've officially reached it, here's how I know:

1. Not coming, sitting, or staying when told

2. Barking while in her kennel

3. Not going potty when let outside, instead she likes to eat grass, snow, sticks, roll and jump around etc.

4. Being very bossy with toys, demanding to play by forcing them in your face/lap

5. Way more frequent zoomies accompanied by loud barking and growling

6. Challenging us when we tell her to… Continue

Sick puppy

Being a first time dog owner, I never realized how much love you can have for an animal. Holly has been sick all day, and I feel so sad and helpless! She was fine when we left the house at 8:30, and thankfully my husband stopped home at 10:30. He found Holly in her kennel surrounded by vomit, looking very sick. He immediately called me and we took her to the vet at 11:00. She vomited twice on the way there. The vet said he does not feel any obstructions or bloating, but she does have a fever.… Continue

How things have changed

I've never written a blog before.....but Matt and I were talking last night about how Holly has really become a great dog, and I just wanted to write about it. There were so many days in the first few months where I felt regretful about getting her and frustrated with all of her behaviors. I didn't feel like she respected me or Matt and she definitely didn't act like she liked us. We both felt so lost and it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Now things have done a… Continue
