Benny the walking desaster area

It was time again that Benny had a stupid accident. We don't know how it happened but in the first night of our trip to the sea I woke up because I heard Benny scratching all the time. When I checked on him I realized that his left eye was closed, tears were running out of it and he couldn't open it anymore. First thing in the morning I tried to find a vet close to us still thinking he just had a pinkeye from driving with an open window. But it turned out that he obviously got something into his eye and there is a small hole in his cornea. Of course I immediately was worried that he will get blind because of this especially because I saw a documentary about another dog with the same thing 2 weeks ago who needed urgently a surgery on the eye. The vet assured us that maybe only a small scar will be left from this but that we needed to be careful with his eye now.
Not that easy if you plan to stay at the beach for a week in windy weather. As we didn't want to leave Benny in the house all the time we thought about solutions to protect his eye and enjoy the beach. And here is the result:

We found a pet store nearby where they sold dog sunglasses. We have used it to protect Benny's eye against the sand and the wind on the beach. He didn't like it at first but after a while he just left it on. Unfortunately I had to keep him on the leash otherwise he would have gone for a swim which was not a good idea with the eye.

Today I will follow up his injury at my local vet, let's see what they say about it.

At least Benny deserves now his new nickname Daddy Cool :)

Hi...saw your note on Adina's tribute to Thule and had to check your page. My Sabrina looks just like Thule also...and your Benny. I think the idea about the glasses is really terrific! Sabrina's eye was "weeping" this Fall also, with no apparent reason..we took her in to have it checked and there was nothing the Dr's could find so they determined it might be from dust or something like that she got in her eye..anyway some antibiotic cream cleared it up, but now I have to watch her when we go to the beach...this would sure work for her! And how "cool" does your Benny look!! What an adorable boy he is!

Good news though. The vet checked the eye again and the hole is already not that big anymore so it is healing fast. Still artifical tears and antibiotics with vitamin A six times a day but he is allowed to run around off leash and he is allowed to swim which he already did. His world is in order again :)
